Shallow breaths filled Damian's ears as he watched life fade from violet eyes underneath him. Her face was pale and twisted with suffering. Below her face, a dagger was buried into her still chest, and her blood stained his hands while he straddled her hips. Crimson stained the bedsheets as well as it soaked the carpet.
The room they were in was unfamiliar to him, but the face he was looking down at wasn't. Before he knew it, his hand was pressed against her cheek, tinting it with her own blood. Tears fell onto her expressionless face as he hovered over it.
"Ana asf. Ana asf. Ana asf-"
"Damian."
"Ana asf. Ana-"
"Damian!"
Damian's face scrunched up with confusion when he opened his eyes to meet violet ones peering down at him. Relief washed over him at the sight.
"It was just a nightmare. You're okay."
He quickly sat up from his bed and was met with several stares. Almost every member of the team was inside his bedroom. "Was I... that loud?"
"These walls are a little thin, you know," Jaime answered with a tired voice.
Raven backed away and gave him space. "You kept saying that you were sorry in your sleep."
"You know Arabic?" Garfield questioned in disbelief.
Raven scoffed at the green boy's remark. "I know more languages than you do animals."
Damian rubbed his tired eyes before glancing at the clock on the wall, reading the late time with guilt. "I apologize for waking you all."
"It is okay. We are just glad that you are okay," Koriand'r spoke before stepping out the door, glancing back one last time before adding, "Get some rest."
Jaime and Garfield bid him goodnight before heading out the door as well, leaving the two alone.
"Don't feel so bad," Raven suddenly spoke, causing Damian to look at her with concern. "Everyone gets nightmares. It's natural."
Damian let out a huff of breath. "I never get them. This is the first one I've ever had."
Raven raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Never?"
He answered her by shaking his head before using his hands to wipe the damp sweat from his forehead.
"Do you... want to talk about it?"
The question took him aback, but his response was quick. "No."
Raven stood up from the spot on his bed and crossed her arms over her chest. "Just offering. I'm good with these types of things."
"I don't want to think about it anymore," Damian assured her, before a thought crossed his mind. "You didn't... see it, did you?"
Raven scoffed at his question. The memory of her witnessing Terra's nightmares immediately popped into her mind, but she shrugged it off. "I don't invade my friends privacy like that. Besides, I didn't get in here until you started to wake up."
"We're friends?" Damian joked, tilting his head at her statement.
"I won't tell anyone if you won't," Raven retorted before using her hand to flick him in the forehead. With that, she left his bedroom without another word.
Once she was gone, Damian reluctantly got up from his bed and made his way to the bathroom, stripping himself of his sweat-soaked clothing. After taking a cool shower, he stared at himself in the mirror with a disturbed expression. Underneath his eyes were dark circles, and his eyes held a heaviness to them.
Damian couldn't understand why he was disgusted with himself. If it was because he hadn't killed her yet, or that deep down, he didn't want to.
The people he usually assassinated were cruel and vile human-beings. However this girl was far from vile or cruel. That's why he didn't understand why she was a target; she posed no threat.
His mother would have a fit if she knew about the situation. As for his grandfather... he didn't even want to imagine what he would do.
Before he went back to sleep, he pulled out his cellphone, finally responding to his mother's spam of worried text messages.
[Ana asf.]
Once he sent it, he lay his phone on the nightstand and used his arm to drape over his forehead, staring at the dimly lit ceiling above. He let out a tired exhale before finally letting his heavy eyelids fall closed.
What he was apologizing for this time, he didn't know yet.
*Ana asf (Arabic) - I'm sorry
