Chapter Six

Lucia sighed and lent into John's shoulder in defeat. They had been dating since year 7 and every one agreed that they were the cutest couple in the school. Feeling third wheeled as they started a whispered conversation, Rebecca turned around to see Brendon approaching her. Since she had met him, they always walked to school together, but they never really spoke much in school. He was the sort of shy person that was unlikely to join in any already established group, or join a conversation of more than one, so it was more than a surprise to have him approach her in the middle of school while Rebecca was with her friends.

"Hi Rebecca" he said with a cautious wave. "Hey Brendon!" Rebecca couldn't help beaming at him. She'd come to really enjoy his company in the mornings and almost found herself looking forward to waking up early for the bus, and their conversations.

"So, um, I was wondering, on the weekend, it's my older sisters wedding and she said that I had to bring a date, and I was wondering, if you could maybe come with me?" He kicked at a stone on the ground before quickly adding "as a friend of course" and then looking back down at his shoes.

Rebecca was acutely aware of Lucia and Johns attention now on her conversation with Brendon, and could practically feel Lucias excitement radiating on her back. She returned her attention to Brendon "Sure, I'd love to!" she could see him relaxing "when is it?"

"Uh, it's all Sunday, but it's okay if you can only come to the reception, or the ceremony if you have other stuff on, um, my sister just needs to see that I have a date and then she'll be fine for you to go home."

Rebecca quickly ran over her Sunday in her head. She had to go into the hospital for volunteering from 8 till 12, and then after that she was supposed to meet Charlie and work on their first podcast for the rest of the day. She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed Charlies number, while talking to Brendon. "sorry Brendon, I just need to check something first - Oh hey Charlie" she said as he picked up and then without waiting for a reply, she started talking "Um, I was just wondering if we could move the filming to Saturday afternoon, something's just come up and -" Charlie cut her off "Calm down Rebie, all's good, I was about to call you about the same thing -" Rebecca heard a school bell in the background. "Sorry, I've got to go, but I'll call you again after school, see ya" and with that Charlie hung up.

Rebecca slid her phone back into her pocket and looked back up at Brendon, "Okay, so I can only come in the afternoon, is that okay?" He smiled at her "Yeah, that's great! I'll text you the details?" He looked behind Rebecca as if suddenly aware that people were listening to their conversation and the idea made him uncomfortable "Yeah that would be great" Rebecca beamed at him and with an awkward wave and a quiet thanks, Brendon walked off.

Ok, I know, short chapter but I'm just struggling with writing at the moment, hopefully it kicks off again soon :-)
