Steve slipped back into his room and got his shield, Clint grabbed his bow, Nat her guns and baton, and Thor his hammer.

"I need an escort upstairs! I have no protection and these guys know who I am." Bruce shouted while running to the staircase.

"I got you, Banner!" Clint yelled from the hallway, now chasing after Bruce.

My heart was racing so fast. It was beating out of my chest. My hands were at my ears and my breathing was so heavy, Tony might have been able to hear it from upstairs. Thor ran to my side and took my face in his hands.

"It will be okay, Y/n." He turned to Loki and said, "Take care of her, Brother. She can't do this."

Loki nodded as Thor looked back at me and placed a communicator in my ear.

"You can come and fight with us if you want. You would be very useful in a time like this, but if it is too much, my brother will stay here with you."

Thor was right. I couldn't be a true superhero if I was afraid of gunshots. My past trauma had put a damper on battles like this, but I needed to start facing my fear. No, this was more than a fear. It was a lifestyle that I had been living for years. Scared of the ringing in my ear, frightened to death that one day that bullet would hit me and take my life. It was an instinct to freeze and shut my eyes when there was a gunshot sound, but that needed to change. Countless battles I have had to sit out on because of this. No longer would this put a strain on my relationship with being a hero.

"I can fight." I say in a whisper so that only the Asgardians could hear.

"Only if you think that you are ready, Y/n..."

"I need to try and fight this thing, Thor. I'll stay on the low and fight from afar."

He simply nodded and ran to the stairs like Banner and Clint had previously done. I took a deep breath in and stood up. Loki placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Let's go." I say firmly, causing him to release his hand and follow me down the hallway.

We could hear the grunts and yells coming from floors above and below us. Gunshots continued, and it seemed to be the way the intruders were fighting. Not the best for me. The shots were muffled so it wasn't that bad, but my mind was still triggered.

I was using my powers to see the opposing team through the floors and ceilings. I would throw them against the wall or teleport them into our holding cell on Floor 2. But just as I was finishing people off on the floor above us, I noticed Helen pinned down by a man with a gun. He was barking words at her, asking her where Tony was. I shot a look at Loki and said something in my mind and sent it to him. And as he read it, I teleported around the corner from them and hear Helen's whimpers.

I took a step around the corner and immediately the man saw me. He had on a red windbreaker coat and black trousers. He had sneakers and a white hockey mask covering his face.

"You guys couldn't have gotten better costumes?" I shout, staring him down. He stood up and Helen back herself up against the wall. The gun flew out of his hand and I nodded for her to run, and that's what she did.

"Freak!" The man yelled at me in a low growl as he rose high off the ground. "Put me down, you monster!"

I was contemplating what to do when it happened.

There was a loud sound that shook in my head and a pang of pain in my shoulder. The man fell onto the ground and ran as fast as he could towards the stairs. I took a heavy gulp and fell to the floor.

There were plenty of footsteps that sounded like earthquakes in my ears. My hand slowly crawled to my shoulder and when I pulled my hand away, shiny crimson blood stained my fingers. I could hear my breath as the ceiling began to spin. After all those years of being scared that eventually I would be shot by that gun my father would point at me, I had finally felt it. And let me tell you, it was horrible.

|Loki's POV|

Y/n teleported away and it was our job to protect each other. I understand she needed to help someone but she could have at least brought me with her. My teleporting abilities had been lost for the past couple weeks. I guess staying in that cell Fury locked me up in didn't give me much mental strength. I ran down the closest staircase and turned the corner just as the gunshot went off.

Y/n fell to the ground and so did the guy she was levitating. The man with the gun quickly started to run but I took him out easily. All that time training in Asgard with Thor, Sif and The Warriors Three wasn't for nothing.

"Everyone," I heard from my earpiece. "There's only one guy left and he's just entering the building. Someone deal with him and we'll all be alright."

I looked down to the unconscious body that lay at my feet. Her blood stained skin was glowing red and her bullet wound was still leaking crimson. I could leave right now. I could escape and never have too look these dumb heroes in the faces again.

But I don't know what came over me at that moment. Maybe it was the pained look that was spread across her face or the fact that she was about to die if I didn't do anything. But people dying had never stopped me before. I knew her. I didn't like her, but I knew her.

Her breath hitched and her eyelids twitched. I couldn't let Y/n sit in the pile of blood and wait for her to just die. Thor and the others cared for her more that I'd ever seen. She needed a good future to make up for her horrible past.

So, I went on the earpiece, explained she needed help, and picked her up bridal style, and ran her to the nearest infirmary.
