"Does anyone know what Veritaserum does?" Snape asked, drawing Hermione's attention.
Her hand shot up. Snape nodded at her with a knowing look. "It's a truth serum. It forces the drinker to answer truthfully to any questions asked."
"Yes, Miss Granger." Snape continued, "Over the course of the next two weeks, you and a partner will be brewing the perfect potion."
Hermione's hand shot up again and Snape could barely contain his eye roll when he nodded at her. "But—The potion is strictly controlled by the Ministry of Magic."
This time, Snape did roll his eyes. "What they don't know can't hurt them." That earned him a few snickers from the Slytherins. "You will all be brewing this potion under my watchful eye and it will in no way be used against your classmates. As I was saying before, you will have two weeks. This week, you'll spend researching the potion and next week you will be perfecting the potion."
On her right, Ron raised his hand. Snape looked surprised for a moment before allowing him to speak. "You said we were going to do this in pairs?"
"Yes, Mr. Weasley. A valid point for once." Snape pulled out his wand and in a bored voice he said, "Accio list." A small piece of paper floated into his hand. "I've decided on the pairings before hand so that the likes of you don't go around messing everything up."
The entire class groaned.
Snape waved them off and began reading the pairings. "Potter and Zabini, Weasley and Parkinson..." Hermione zoned out, watching as her classmates frowned when their names were called. After a while she heard, "Granger and Malfoy," and her eyes widened, staring at Snape.
He moved on to the next pair on the list.
This couldn't be happening. Hermione cautiously glanced at Malfoy who was looking right back at her with a scowl. When Snape had finished reading off the pairs, he ordered everyone to sit with their partners.
Everyone in the class simultaneously groaned but complied anyway. Hermione looked over at Malfoy again, waiting for him to walk over to her. He simply smirked and folded his hands on his table.
Scowling, Hermione made her way over to the seat next to him, dreading the next two weeks.

Though it pained him to do so, Draco couldn't ignore the annoying little witch sitting right next to him.
When potions was dismissed, Draco stood up from his seat, ready to make a run for it, only to find Snape standing in his way. "Don't leave yet. I must speak with you," Snape told him, walking to the far end of the classroom.
They waited until everyone had filed out of the classroom. Once the last student left, Snape turned his cold, dark eyes on Draco. "I know you may be unhappy with your pairing—"
"Oh stop it," Draco said. "I know you don't care. What is it you need to talk to me about?"
Snape sighed. "Your father has written to me recently." Draco raised his eyebrows but he masked his shock well. Snape continued, "He wants me to split up the Golden Trio so that they'll struggle with their mission to stop the Dark Lord, buying the Death Eaters more time to infiltrate and take over Hogwarts."
"What do I have to do with any of this?" Draco asked.
"Your father might have mentioned that you've refused to take the Dark Mark. He says this is a test of your loyalty," Snape replied.
