Hermione jolted awake.

She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, wondering where she was. Everything was dark. She fumbled around for her wand. When she finally found it, she cast the Lumos charm.

She was in the hospital. On her left was Draco Malfoy.  She wondered how long she had been there. Madam Pomfrey had instructed her to wait with Malfoy until he woke up. What if he had woken up? What if he had broken other bones? What if they didn't treat him properly?

What if he was dead?

Hermione picked up his right arm—the one that wasn't injured—and put her fingers over his wrist, looking for a pulse.

"I'm not dead," came Malfoy's sleepy voice.

Hermione jumped, startled. "Clearly," she said with a deadpan expression.

"Why are you here?" he asked.

"Madam Pomfrey wanted me to be here when you woke up to make sure you were okay," Hermione responded.

"Why so late?" he said. "What time is it?"

Hermione squinted to make out the hands of the clock. "It's nearly three in the morning," she answered. "I fell asleep, I guess." She shrugged nonchalantly.

Malfoy tried to sit up but he winced with the movement. Hermione put her hand on his shoulder, pushing him back down into a lying position. "Don't move or do anything strenuous for that matter. You'll need to stay here for a little bit while your arm gets stronger. It'll only be a day or two, but you can't do anything stupid."

"Yes, Mom," Malfoy mocked.

Hermione swatted him. She stood up. "I'm going back to my common room to beat up Ronald," she joked.

Malfoy put his hand to his heart. "Wow, you care! I'm touched," he said sarcastically.

"Don't let it get to your head," she warned with a playful eye roll.

She walked out of the hospital and headed towards the Gryffindor common room and into her dorm. She quietly crawled into her bed and fell asleep.

It felt like she was only asleep for minutes before Ginny began shaking her. "'Mione wake up!" she said. "You're late for potions!"

Hermione opened one eye. "WHAT?! Why didn't anyone wake me?"

"We thought it would be best if we let you sleep through breakfast. We figured you'd be there by then but..." Ginny paused and frowned. "Where were you last night that's got you so disorientated?"

"I ended up sleeping in the medic wing with Malfoy and then woke up in the middle of the night and came here," Hermione said, yawning.

"You WHAT?!" Ginny exclaimed. "You slept with Malfoy in the medic wing?!"

Hermione gasped. "No, you perv! I fell asleep while I was watching him."

"He's that boring to look at?" Ginny inquired.

Hermione smacked her. "No! Stop it!" She laughed. "Madam Pomfrey wanted me to be there in case he woke up because she had to attend to other patients."

Ginny nodded. "I suppose that makes sense."

Hermione stood up. "Yes, it makes sense. Now, let me get changed so I can show up late to potions."

After a few minutes, Hermione emerged from the bathroom and she and Ginny walked into the potions class together. Hermione looked at the empty table where Malfoy usually sat and headed over to it, pulling out the potions text book.
