"Tom! Get your butt down here!" I yelled impatiently up the stairs. I heard rustling and then Tom appeared at the top of the stairs. He brushed his dirty blonde bangs out of his face and bounded down the steps. I couldn't help smiling at him. It didn't look like he had given any effort in brushing his hair. He hooked his arm around my neck and started walking me to the front door. I tried in frustration to comb down his hair with my fingers. He smirked at me. "Someone get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?" I rolled my eyes and hopped in our black Subaru. Tom got in the driver's seat and started our car. He left the abandoned house we had stayed in the past week, driving through the forest.
"Well, that's the longest we've ever stayed anywhere." I sighed to Tom.
He glanced at me. "You miss it already?"
"Ha," I said. I leaned on the window and gazed at him. When I was little, my older sister would tell me that one day I would marry him. I would just scrunch up my tiny nose and say, "I can't marry my best friend!" Now, however, ever since we had gone so many places together and became such close friends, I thought I might be starting to feel something more towards him. We seem to have grown closer than we had ever been before.
He noticed me looking and flipped his hair back dramatically. "I know I'm fabulous, but you don't have to stare."
I laughed sarcastically. "Actually I was thinking about how UN-fabulous your hair looks." He snickered and took my hand. My heart jumped a little.
"We will find a place to stay before we go on any more 'adventures.' Deal?" He looked me straight in the eyes. His bright blue ones were so sincere, no one could possibly turn them down.
"Deal." I said with just as much sincerity.

We were driving down the small forest road, our fingers still entwined, when all of a sudden the car shuddered to a stop. I sat up, confused.
"This doesn't make any sense," Tom said, also confused, "this car is almost brand new." I started to respond when something smacked me across the head. Red spots shot across my vision and I landed against the window. I tried to blink them out of my eyes, but the throbbing in my left temple was so powerful it was getting hard to keep conscious. Tom started to reach for me when he, too, was knocked out.
"Tom..." I murmured, but he was already out cold. I felt myself going out too. The last thing I remember seeing is a tall, thin man sit up from the back seat, but my vision was too blurred to make out details.

Then I slipped into unconsciousness.
