11 :: Elude

BYEOL retched as she passed by some bodies lying on the road. She felt a fractious urge to give up. Beomgyu was running holding one of her hands. They had no specific destination where they were supposed to go. All she knew was that they were in a big mess and had no guarantee that they would be alive for long.

She used to be a regular on the same street. How things had changed! She couldn't understand why people changed drastically. She never thought something of such would ever be possible. Human beings had managed to be less violent in the era she was living in. Galon was obviously an exception. Peace had reigned in her humble country throughout her life.

The walls of the houses were now painted with crimson blood as if some immature children were trying graffiti art on them. Smashed heads and dismembered bodies felt so horrible to look at! Humans were destroying their own species and yet no one had the courage to speak out.

Where were all those well wishers of the world? Where were the laws and police? Everything was dead. Law was always blind and humans were taking up every opportunity to make sure that it had its other organs tied up too along with its eyes. A pang of disappointment and feeling of helplessness took over her as she caught a glimpse of an injured puppy hiding under a garbage can.

She did nothing to help it. She didn't tell Beomgyu to stop since her life wasn't even in her hands. She wished that it would get to survive anyhow.

Beomgyu shot her a worried glance as he slowed down his pace. Byeol seemed extremely restless.

"Are you okay? Should we stop nearby?"

Byeol nodded as she felt her feeble body giving up slowly. Hearing some loud footsteps both of them looked behind them. To their horror, there were some wild teenagers approaching towards them with baseball bats.

"What's wrong with them? Why in the world are they chasing us?"

" Do I seem like I know? God I don't know myself. Everyone seemed to have gone nuts within a few days."

"This is way too strange. How can the system of the entire world collapse like this?"

Beomgyu muttered a few imperceptible profanities. He had no idea about what to do next. He had dragged her out of her residence out of panic and now he felt himself sinking inside a big hole he had made himself unknowingly.

"Don't give up Byeol! We need to find a proper shelter first. They are going to catch up with us soon."

The next thing he knew was that he was practically hauling his exhausted partner towards the nearby abandoned harbour. It was the only place he knew in the locality. He hoped that he remembered all the directions they were showing on telivision show a month ago.

"We need to go faster! They seem dangerous." shrieked Byeol as she glanced towards the teenagers nearing them.

" I am trying my very best."

Beomgyu felt even more nervous when some muffled words from the little devils asking them to halt reached his ears. Was this really the end?

They were passing by several houses. He was getting confused every passing second. Would they be able to reach the harbour safely?

He held Byeol's hand tighter and kept running. The teenagers seemed to be calling behind. They just needed to reach to reach the harbour. He had heard that the ships were still fully furnished even though they are not being used. He hoped that they would figure out a way there.
