Leonardo's P.O.V

Today was a big deal. The day I confronted my parents.

It took a few days for the snow to melt, and we savoured every second of it. On our way downstairs, I heard Rufus barking from the kitchen. When I walked in, trash was scattered across the floor.

As I crouched to clean it up, something caught my eye. A crumpled piece of paper with it, the letters:
V. G.

Why were those initials feel so familiar? Think, brain. Think, think, think. Nothing. I was drawing a blank. Hopefully it would come to me soon.

I finished cleaning and walked over to Rufus's playpen. "Uncle Wes is coming to babysit. So be on your best behavior, okay? Bye, bud."

I gave him a quick hug, grabbed the car keys, and loaded our bags into the trunk. Then I slipped into the passenger seat and fastened my seatbelt.

Vinnie showed up a few minutes later, finishing a phone call. "Just tell me later. Leo and I need to hit the road. Okay, bye. Love you too, bro. Don't forget to come pick up Rufus."

"Who was that?" I asked.

"Just Wes. He wanted to tell me something important, but I told him to wait."

"Alright." I fiddled with my fingers. "I'm nervous. I haven't seen them in forever."

He kissed me. "Don't be. I'm here. Moral support and all."

Vinnie pulled out of the driveway. His hands were on the wheel, eyes focused ahead. I watched him, watched the world slip by outside.

"If you get tired, we can stop at a motel," I offered.

"I'm fine. Maybe later."

I bit into the granola bar he'd gotten me from the gas station. As I chewed, something kept tugging at my thoughts.

"You know, if we ever got married, what would our surname be? Or would we get it hyphenated?"

"I'll just take yours."

I scoffed, "Why don't you give me a choice in the matter?"

"I just think your last name is nicer than mine."

"Why don't you let me be the judge of that?"

"Woah, Leo. What's really wrong? Is something bothering you?"

"Why don't you ever tell me things?" I asked in an adversarial fashion.

"What do you mean by that? I tell you everything."

"No you don't, Vin. I bore my heart out to you, but you shut me out."

It was his time to scoff. "That's a little dramatic, don't you think?

"If you can't tell me your last name. Then, I'm not talking to you."

"Are you being serious?"

I ignored him and watched him get all worked up. He started this. Last names weren't a big deal. I don't know why he was making it one.

"Really, Leonardo? Fine, be that way. No one likes mister grouchy pants."

"Fine!" I said and looked out the window.

The trees danced with glee as a gust of wind blew from the heavens. The evening prevailed, and the sunset was receding. But something caught my attention.

V. G.

It was carved into a seat buckle in the backseat. I didn't realise it until now. My brows furrowed in confusion.
