CHAPTER ONE

-

It had been years since Cadimus had seen his own face.

From his position on the ground he could see the faint reflection of his cheek in the murky water. A stranger stared back at him, pale, ugly and flawed.

Cadimus had almost forgotten why he wore the opal ring that hid his true face...almost.

They had stolen it from him, stripped it off his fingers along with every other stone on his person; standard operating procedure for the sons of the Phoenix. After all it was far too dangerous to take a Dragon-blooded captive without immediately separating them from their power source: Precious Stones of the earth.

Each different stone allowed the Dragon-blooded to access and channel different facets of their power. Without the stones, a Dragon-blooded, could perform no magic, breath no fire. Or in Cadimus case, hide the truth of his wretched face.

Turning his head away from the watery reflection Cadimus rested his cheek against the cool smooth stone he had been thrown against. He was thankful for its presence beneath him since the hog-tie they had wrestled him into had him positioned so any attempt at escape would result in him landing face down in the several inches of water covering the whole of the sunken ruins.

Cadimus had no intention of giving them the satisfaction of Drowning a Dragon.

"You left him alone?!" a masculine voice rang out through the hollow building echoing across the pale towers of crumbling limestone amid a murky swamp.
