Behind the masks, faces suffer loneliness

if jeongin knew the classroom 'conversation' hyunjin and him had was going to be their last proper one for the next weeks, he would've skipped his class to make it longer. the past two weeks were busy, be it for hyunjin or jeongin. the younger spend night putting his end-of-the-year project together through countless editing apps and far too many caffeine beverages. though minho visited him every other day to make food and even brought him energy drinks --which jeongin refused to drink because of a time hyunjin scolded him about consuming those--his days felt bland; lack of hyunjin making them forgettable.
"you and hyunjin have been hanging out less recently."
"thank you for the reminder, jisung. it's not like i noticed."
that was enough to shut the squirrel up, the eye roll adding up to jeongins moodiness. felix shared a concerned look with him, wondering if it was just a moody day for jeongin, or maybe their friend was always like that, yet they didnt pay enough attention to notice.
"just go and talk to him. make plans for fucks sake! why are you moping around when you have the option of being with him?"
and maybe minhos words were the solution, but jeongin refused to listen; successfully shutting him up by throwing a pillow at his face. although he knew what the cat lover said made sense, he hesitated to act. hyunjin hasn't been contacting him, and other than a small 'good morning!' and 'how are you?' the two barely talked. it even came down to jeongin approaching the elder first (in case you thought the young fox would come down so easily without a fight!) it took jeongin about 13 failed attempts before he officially stopped. hyunjin was important, but so was his pride and sense of self worth. he knew better than to chase someone who's less than interested.
"your stubbornness will get you in your grave."
minho lastly sighed, getting off of jeongins bed and putting clothes on. he was fresh out of the shower. "anyways, tootsies! i will make sure to enjoy my date while you mope about your tragic love!" the laugh that made jeongin want to rip all his hair out rang through the house as minho left, closing every door behind him.
finally, jeongin internally sighed getting back to his work; or at least tried to. barely five minutes into his work, a knock against the front doors was heard. and in all honesty, jeongin tried to ignore it. obviously it was minho who must've forgotten something on his way out. he was sure of it.
but after the knocking continued for the second- and third time, he couldn't stand it. making his way to the entrance he was ready to give minho a handful of his mind. however, as he opened the door he didn't expect the person standing behind it.
"i haven't seen little foxie in a while..."
"right? wonder what he's up to."
"i know! we should have hyunjin invite him over again!"
"i am like, right here. if you guys want to gossip go somewhere else." hyunjin announced as he opened his yogurt snack and started eating it. yeji and minhyun paid his grumbling no mind.
"but we will be leaving soon." yeji started, pouting. "we want to see him one more time."
"you can come back a weekend later" hyunjin stated, matter of factly. he ate another spoonful of the dessert, looking down at the marble counter. "him and i haven't been hanging out recently."
the twins were quick to catch the slight shift in hyunjins usual sassy and dare they say bright demeanor. he wasn't exactly the most excited person in the room, but recently if jeongin was the topic of their conversation he was definitely happier. however today wasn't the case.
"why not?" minhyun asked before yeji could, stepping forward to stand pressed to the counter right across of hyunjin.
"just.." hyunjin started, "stuff came up. i'm too busy to see him now.
"i think he's mad at me."
"you should've started with that." minhyun said without an ounce of hesitation. yeji ended up slapping his arm with a hushed 'shut up'.
"why do you think that?"
"Because!" He threw his arms in exaggeration, "he's so dry over text, and recently has been barely responding to me. I've been busy preparing for my performance so I haven't had a lot of time to text him, but he doesn't initiate conversations either. And the times he did it was the most inconvenient time ever, and I think I have him the impression that I don't want to talk to him. This is just so- ugh!"
The boy plopped on the couch head first, face in his hands. His feet kicking the air in a child-like manner as he screams in agony. His sibling at a loss of word from him behavior.
Hyunjin, although younger, barely lost his composure like that nowadays. The hwang family is known for their dramatic antics and expressions, but after Yeji and Minhyuk moved out for college they became a lot more easy going and immature around him whilst the younger brother started acting as if he was the one who's 22. The change of dynamic was welcomed as it switched up the pace of their usual routines. They still babied their brother and let him get away with pretty much anything, they thought it was adorable the way he ordered them around and scolded them. But it has been awhile since they've seen him so...not composed.
"Hyunjin, you like him don't you?"
Minhyuk sat down on the floor, back leaned against the couch near hyunjins head. He gave Yeji a look, and she understood that this was an important bonding moment for her brothers relationship, and so she stepped away towards the kitchen to give them some privacy.
"I'm not going to admit it to you, it's too embarrassing." The younger whined, the pillow making his sentences come out muffled. "But yes. I like him too much even. So much that being away from him right now makes my heart ache."
Hyunjin sits up, and rolls down to sit next to his brother who hums in understanding. "Have you confessed to him yet?"
"No."
Hyunin winces when he feels a hand smack he back of his head.
"You pabo! How do you expect him to know how you feel if you don't tell him. Especially if right now there is so little time you two to be together. If you don't talk to him and avoid him, of course he will be mad and think you're not interested."
"But he hasn't confessed either!"
Minhyuk smacked him on the head again. "Who cares what he does, I'm talking about you." Minhyun shakes his head in disappointment, stopping Hyunjins hands when the younger tried to fight him back. "When you want something, you need to have the strength and confidence to go it, especially when it comes to love." Hyunjin face lights red from the word. "And if you can't even do that then maybe it's better to stay friends. When you're in a relationship, you realize that confessing was the easiest part of it. There will be so many things you will need to account for, and so many difficult conversations you will need to have. If you don't have strength and trust that the person you're with is someone who you can go through these times with together. If you're not confident that they can do that with you, it's better not to move forward so fast."
Minhyuk finished his speech and turns to look at hyunjin who had his mouth dropped open like a fish gasping for air. He truly didn't expect such words of wisdom coming from his brother.
"Hyung, who hurt you." Hyunjin received his third smack.
"Yah! I'm trying to help you out."
Hyunjin laughs at his brothers distress, and soon the two settle in a comfortable silence.
"But I understand. Thank you. You helped me realize something I need to do." The younger of the brothers stands up and goes towards the door. Grabbing his keys and putting on his shoes, leaving the house.
Hi friends!
Anyone here from the beginning?🙈
Amidst classes, work, and life I've regained my passion and interest in writing fan fiction, so maybe I'll be able to finish the story. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but the first few chapters are a mess and there's a lot of plot holes that I would like to fix. I can only hope for your support🙏 thank you for reading the story!
