We walked around the museum together in silence. I look at the painting called, "Enchanted Night", it depicted a silhouette of a man and woman both dressed formally, in a forest dancing to the invisible music, a light shining only on them.
"The painter, died making this painting." Ryder says beside me. I'm startled a bit, forgetting he was with me. He looks at me questioningly and I sigh. I look up at the painting again. I hear the murmurs of voices around us die down.
"How did he die?" I ask quietly.
"It says here that he had cancer, while he was in the hospital he often thought of his wife and so for his wife, the last thing he did was paint for her." Ryder says to me softly, giving me goose bumps.
"Well it's a lovely painting." I check my phone and it's already four, school ended about an hour ago. "I think the traffic is only a trickle now, should we get going?" I ask him. He looks at me and sighs, nodding. Okay... We get to my car and I turn it on and we leave onto the highway. "So, what are your interests?" I ask starting up a conversation. Ryder wasn't that bad, he was handsome, he seemed kind, and he just moved here so he doesn't have many friends yet... Maybe I'll be his first friend here. A smile grew on my face.
"What are you smiling about?" Ryder asks.
"Oh nothing, I was just thinking of something, anyway your interests?" I say.
"Uh, yeah, hmm, I like reading and I like looking at paintings." I glance over at him. "I know boring right?" He says a smile on his face. "You wouldn't expect that from a hot guy like me huh?" I out right laughed. He looks a bit startled. "Am I not attractive?" He asks confusion written all over his face.
"No it's not that, it's just, you sure are full of yourself." I finish laughing. "It's refreshing to meet someone like you, different from the rest. You keep to yourself, but you seem really kind and caring even with that mysterious danger vibe you have about you." I sigh and switch lanes. I glance over at him and he's looking at the review mirror.
"We're being followed."
"What?" I ask, now this was outrageous.
"That car behind us has been following us ever since we left the museum. Speed up." I did and the car behind us followed suit. When I switched to a lane, three minutes later the car would be behind me again.
"What do I do?" I ask him.
"Switch seats with me, it's going to go straight after this turn, so slowly unbuckle your seatbelt, and then switch it on cruise control." I heard his buckle unbuckle but I had some trouble with mine. I heard him sigh as he unbuckles it for me, he motions me to get up and I do and he smoothly switches seats while I stumble about. "Let's see what this baby can do." Ryder says a smile on his face, he glances over at me. "You might want to buckle up." I buckle myself in and he steps on the gas. Dodging cars left and right after a good ten minutes I look back to see the person following us do the same.
"Uh...not to alarm you but, they're still following us." I hear him swear under his breath and his grip on the wheel tightens. I study him, quietly. He radiates power, and his vibe was really bad. "What are you?" I say softly and he turns to look at me, his eyes menacing and focused. I inhaled sharply and my legs felt weak with the look he given me. Then they soften and he smiles and turns back to the road.
"What do you mean? What are you? Silly, I'm human." I shake my head and look at the road ahead of us.
"Yeah," I laugh, "how silly of me to ask such a thing." I could feel my palms start to get clammy. I turn on the air condition. I look over at the speed meter to see it at a good 200mph. My eyes widen, but then I quickly turn to look out the window, everything passing by quickly. He took a cut off and we were almost back at the school. He glances back, now that we were at normal speed limit of 25.
"I think we lost them." He lets out a sigh of relief.
"How did you do that?" I ask him, simply curious at the mysterious being before me. I really didn't know Ryder at all.
"My dad owned a sports car and I used to race them all the time, with my buddies at night back home. I guess I got used to it." We made the turn into the parking lot; it was only 4:20, only twenty minutes passed by over that entire span of land and cars. He parked the car.
"Why are we here?" I ask him.
"I don't know where you live and I am sure that you told me, you needed to pick someone up."
"I did?" I ask him and he nods. I look around to see no one. "But there's no one here." Right after I said that there was a knock at my window and I jumped in my seat. I look and see Zach frowning. He gets into the backseat.
"Who's this?" Zach says getting all hissy.
"Hi, I'm Ryder." Ryder says turning and sticking out his hand for Zach to shake. Zach simply looks at me.
"Why is this kid in your car and in the driver's seat?" Zach asks me. I sigh, I wasn't in the mood for this really. I still had questions of my own pertaining to Ryder himself.
"It's a long story, Ryder can you drive him to his house, I'll give you the directions."
"Happily." Ryder says and glares at Zach in the review mirror. With a huff Zach ignores the both of us. We drop him off and he slams my door. Way to go Dani, just make an enemy of the only friend you have in school.
"Is he always like that?" Ryder asks and I sigh and shake my head. We were at a stop light, heading to where? I have no idea. My eyes started closing.
"Ryder...drive yourself home..." I say and fall asleep, the last thing I saw was him looking at me with concern.
