In Their Dreams

Dela woke up drenched in water.

A wave rolled in and she began to cough up the salt water filling her lungs.

Beginning to gain consciousness, she found herself lying down on the shoreline of a deserted island.

"What?" Dela questioned in her soft voice, overly confused and overwhelmed being at the beach.

Slowly, she stood up and backed up from the waves and into the mountains of sand behind her. Looking around, everything seemed so real, so very real. But for some reason, she could tell she was only dreaming. But why here? Why on a deserted island.

Suddenly, a gut feeling that this dream was going to end bad, washed over her.

After a few moments of gathering her thoughts, and telling herself that she wasn't in any danger, she took advantage of the dream and decided to walk along the shoreline of the island's beach.

One footstep after another, she wondered where the dream would lead her to. She wondered when she would wake up. The waves crashing around her like a storm were somewhat settling.

But abruptly, she was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard something behind her. A crack of a twig maybe.

She spun around, only to be met with a another person. A boy. His eyes shimmering in the pale moonlight.

"Hello?" Dela questioned.

"W-who are you? I don't think we've met before." The boy returned to the girl.

Dela scoffed, "I'm Dela and yeah no kidding, this is a dream. You must just be my imagination."

The boy replied, "Well I guess the same thing goes for you. I'm Ray, by the way."

The two teens started to walk along the shoreline together.

"This dream sorta seems a little to real if I'm being honest. I think I might be out of my mind," the girl went on.

"Makes two of us," Ray responded.

The two remained in silence for a little while longer.

Ray broke the silence when he said, "So um, how's your life going at the moment? Just curious, and of course because you're not real it would be my imagination anyway."

"Hey!" Dela snapped. "Who's to say I'm not real. I mean to me, you're the same. But yeah, life's been a bit of a downer lately. One of my best friend's Jamie just moved away from my town. What about you?" Dela then sighed and stared down at her feet as they continued to walk.

" Yeah same with me. You know family stuff at home," Ray said.

"What do you mean by that?"

"My family is having issues with me at the moment. I'm getting really sick of it," Ray said, tears forming in his eyes.

"I'm sorry," Dela replied softly.

"For what?" Ray was confused, why was this imaginary girl he just met apologising at him.

"For your family having difficulties."

"No it's fine. I'm used to it by now. It's my fault anyways, not being the son my parents want me to be. You see my sister-"

Ray was suddenly cut off when the world around the two teenagers started to blur and fade away into the distance.

"What's happening," Dela said confused.

"I guess we must be waking. Well me at least," Ray said.

"Yeah, I guess so."

Both teenagers, though they didn't say, both enjoyed their "imaginary" persons' company. It seemed to bring them a bit of clarity and comfort at the time.

"Until next time," Ray said before he disappeared into nothing.

"Bye-" Dela tried to say back, but it was too late, the world had completely faded into black and she found herself back in her bedroom.

Back in the real world.
