I stood in my bedroom, getting ready for anti-prom. My hair was done, my dress was on, and my makeup was perfect. Yet, I was still staring at myself in the mirror, checking every little thing to make sure it was really perfect."Big night tonight... don't wanna blow it..." I spoke to myself, "Where are my shoes!?" I began looking around my room for a pair of plain black flats, "Oh god, where are they!?" I went through random piles of clothes and anywhere else.
"Mom!?" I cried, unsure if she was even home.
"Yeah?" She responded.
"Have you seen my black flats!?" The door then opened and she stood there.
"Why're you dressed like that?"
"Anti-prom..."
"Oh, right, are they by the front door?" I ran out of my room, down the short hallway and into the living room where my father blankly watched the television. My eyes darted to the front door where they neatly sat.
"Found them!" I said, quickly slipping them on, "He's gonna be here any minute..."
"Who?" She asked, now standing in the living room.
"Pete..." I spoke, "He's my date..."
"Pete? You never told me about a boy named Pete. What's he like?"
"He's..." And in that moment I realized I barely had an answer, "He's rich..."
"And...?" I just shrugged, "You're going with a boy you barely know!?" I shrugged once again, "Why don't you go with that other boy... Frank? He's nice." And I got a sting in my chest, then heard a knock at the door.
"I dunno mom, I gotta go..." I opened the door and quickly walked out.
"Bye, don't stay out too late!" I heard behind me before closing the door. When I turned around I found Pete standing there in a very classy suit.
"Hey..." I spoke.
"Hi," He paused for a moment and gazed at the little trailer in front of him, "This is your house?"
"Yeah..."
"It's so small..." He spoke as if he had never seen a trailer park before.
"Well I mean, I am poor..." I giggled, "C'mon, let's go."
"Alright," He gazed back at me, and took my hand.
"Wait, this is your car?" I asked as he led me to a fire engine red Ferrari.
"Yeah," He opened the door for me before getting in on the driver side, "You look really... nice..." He awkwardly spoke, now driving.
"Thank you..." The rest of the car ride was filled with a terribly awkward silence until we got to the skatepark.
We didn't speak a single word to each other as we got out of the car, and walked to the park. A good amount of people were already there, talking and dancing. There was a boom box set on one of the wooden tables blasting music, another one with a cooler with, what I could only assume to be, alcohol inside.
I wanted to pull away from Pete to hang out with my friends. But I restrained myself. As much as I didn't care to be there with him, I couldn't just ditch him.
"Who the hell are these people?" I heard Pete ask.
"...my friends..." I said, glancing at him.
"Oh..." He began, "They seem... like an interesting group of people..."
"Pete, you can say weird. We're used to it. Now c'mon, let's dance!" I dragged him over by the boom box where we began dancing.
