Secondary school science lessons. To the students they were nothing more than a free period to just mess around with your mates and get none of the actual work done as your teacher ends up ripping out their hair. However there was only so far you could push before the whole class was seated in silence with the head of the school sitting at the back corner of the room with disappointment written straight across his face.
The typically loud, rebellious, outgoing class made no more noise than a funeral. Only on occasion could you hear the ruffle of someone's blazer or the click of a pen as the teacher tried to go through their PowerPoint presentation.
Callum wasn't exactly one of the loud students of the class, of course he liked joking around with his friends but he was also a hard worker who wasn't known to act out. The person he was sitting by however, was quite the opposite. They were loud and bolshy and didn't seem to know when to stop. They were never spiteful (Callum found to be quite the opposite) but they never knew when to stop talking and calling out over people.
It was no surprise to him that they were one of the few that got shouted at by the headteacher as he was called in to deal with the rowdy students that happened to be distributing a lot of people, Callum being one of them. He wasn't the easiest to get to talk to people who he wasn't overly aware of, but he found comfort in the brash, loud student who sat beside him in science class.
They only ever shared a few classes, science being the only one they even remotely sat close to each other in, but never once did he see himself making friends with the loud one. It wasn't like they were popular, they were actually quite loud about their strong dislike to the "popular" kids, but they weren't unknown like Callum seemed to be. Most people knew of the brash kid and made up their opinions about them, whether to keep it to themselves or not was only their own business.
So as Callum had a note passed from his right side, he didn't know what to feel. He's over the moon that they would think to try communicating to him even despite the strict regulations, or a deep pit in his stomach of getting caught out by the headteacher despite it not being his idea.
Taking a deep breath and sparing them a short glance as they glanced around the room, he read the small slip of paper ripped straight out of their science book. The note displayed a picture of the teacher at the front, drawn very poorly with labels and writing explaining each bad part of them.
Callum just wished he could laugh.
Instead a hand was placed over his mouth to seem non-suspicious to the people around, mostly the two teachers dotted around the room.
Decided to turn it over and do the same to the other teacher - the head - to pass it back over.
Before long, the two were passing notes two and through for a while. But not for too long before being caught. Their names were called from the head, still at the back of the room but quickly moving towards them.
For once dread didn't even fill Callum as he felt his friend beside him start quietly laughing, he was on for a ride and or once he was more than ready.
