it was midday and you were sprawled out on your bed, staring at the ceiling blankly. it had been 2 days since jaemin had spoken to you, and the only person that had entered your room since was your nurse. she looked stern but had brought you food and gently tended to your wounds. she was yet to speak a single word to you, and it was driving you crazy.

you spent your hours thinking. there wasn't much to think about, really, since you couldn't remember anything past last week, but you tried to imagine what your life was like before that night. did you have a family that would be searching for you right now? was there anyone who would be missing you? you bit your lip and tried to swallow the lump that was rising in your throat.

suddenly, the door swung open. you sprung up, trying desperately to blink away the warm tears that were threatening to spill out. jaemin walked in, and you glared at him. "ready to stop ignoring me now, are you?" you spat.

jaemin's face remained stony as he said, "your mission starts tomorrow."

your eyebrows rose. "my mission?"

"yes. i'm here to discuss the details of it with you," he replied.

"and if i don't want to carry out this mission? you're going to keep me imprisoned here forever?"

he pressed his lips together. "you're not imprisoned."

"how is locking me in a room not considered imprisonment?" you demanded, your voice rising to a shout.

"you weren't locked in here," he responded coolly.

"what?"

"i instructed nurse kim to leave the door unlocked."

you blinked at him in disbelief. he cocked an smug eyebrow. "what, you're telling me you haven't even tried to open the door?"

you clenched your jaw. "what were you saying about my mission?"

"right, your mission," he said, the cocky expression not leaving his face. "tomorrow, you're going to sneak into the city, where—"

"hold on," you interrupted, "who said i agreed?"

he scowled. "i saved you. you are indebted to me. there is no option to disagree, unless you want to experience what real imprisonment is like."

you went silent. you really did not want to experience real imprisonment. only two days of being alone and locked up (at least, under the impression that you were) had almost driven you mad. and you supposed it would be nice to be out and about in the city. reluctantly, you asked, "what will i have to do?"

jaemin, clearly satisfied at your quick compliance, continued. "you're going to blend in as best as possible with the townspeople and gather all the information you can."

you drew your brows together. "and this wasn't something jeno or that other guy could've done?"

"they're too high risk. they could be easily recognized, and i can't afford to lose them. you, on the other hand..." he trailed off, scrutinizing you.

you held his stare through narrowed eyes. "what, i'm a nobody whose life doesn't matter to you?"

"that's a harsh way to put it but yes, if something were to happen to you, it wouldn't be entirely detrimental to us."

you smiled sarcastically. "yeah, can't wait to get myself killed with no one to mourn me."

jaemin broke the stare, saying nothing in reply. he turned and with a final "i'll give you more details tomorrow", he left.
