you gaped up at him, still consumed by shock over what you had just done. it was like... instinct. like you've done this before.

if jaemin was still shocked by your stunt, he didn't show it. "now, are you going to sit down without trying to kill me? i really don't want to have to restrain you."

"i'll sit," you croaked.

"good." he released you, stepping back. he took a seat by the desk, leaving you to sit on the bed awkwardly.

he reached into his pocket, and pulled out a roll of gauze. he took your arm and peeled the bandages off, then replaced them with new ones (PRETEND I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT OK). his hands were surprisingly nimble and moved with skill.

"jeno said the nurse was supposed to do this for me," you said, after moments of silence.

"i had things to discuss with you, so i figured i would just do it." jaemin replied, eyes still trained on your arm.

"things to discuss?"

he nodded in affirmation. he looked up and you realized he was done replacing the bandages on both your arms. he rose, leaning closer to you and getting to work on the bandages wrapped around your head.

you sat in silence, not knowing where to look, as his torso was right in front of your face. you noticed for the first time what he was wearing. he was dressed smartly in a collared shirt with an embellished jacket on top. it was very different than the simple dark tunic and cloak you had seen him wear the other day in the woods. speaking of which, that reminded you...

"where am i?" you demanded.

he froze. moments later he replied, "we're in the palace."

"what?!" you jerked your head in shock.

he held your head in place and continued wrapping the bandages. "this room is no royal suite, but it works well enough."

questions raced in your head. "and who are you?"

"that... you don't need to know," he said simply.

annoyed, you continued your interrogation. "how long have i asleep for?"

"a couple of days. i was worried i had accidentally killed you, or at least put you into a coma or something... but the doctor assured me you just needed some rest."

"oh... well, i feel a lot better."

"your wound wasn't anything too worrying. although, he did say that it probably led to some memory loss."

the conversation ended abruptly and awkwardly. you didn't know what to say. jaemin's proximity was making you rather uncomfortable, and the overwhelming smell of his cologne was distracting you greatly.

he finished replacing the bandages, and tucked the gauze back into his jacket pocket. he sat back down on the chair. you tensed, suddenly anxious.

"so, i guess it's my turn to ask questions now," he spoke, with an air of confidence about him that, despite his being dressed completely differently, reminded you of the intimidating boy that had threatened to kill you in the forest a couple of days ago.

"go ahead."

"well," he straightened his jacket, "what do you remember?"

"um, nothing. i mean, i remember my name. and... that's about it."

jaemin's eyebrows rose questioningly. "nothing at all? "

irritated at his doubtful tone, you replied, "i've tried to remember but i can't. it feels like i've just never had memories in the first place."

"and why should i believe that you're telling the truth?" he asked with narrowed eyes.

"why would i have any reason to lie?" you bit back.

"well, i don't know. i happen to stumble upon a strange girl in the woods, who claims she has no idea how she got there. if you were in my shoes, don't you think you'd doubt yourself too?"

you scowled. "you think i hit my head on purpose and pretended to lose all of my memories?"

"i'm saying it's plausible. listen, the doctor told me that the head injury shouldn't have been enough to have completely wiped your memory."

"well i wouldn't know what did, i can't remember a thing!" you glared at him. he raked a hand through his hair, frustrated.

"fine," he said. "let's say i believe you. the first thing you remember is waking up in the forest?"

"yes—" you began to say before catching yourself. "wait, no. there were... feet. i remember feet. someone was walking away from me but i couldn't see their face. i blacked out and... sorry, i really don't remember."

his brows knit together. he hummed, deep in thought, "that's interesting."

"what do you mean?"

"it doesn't matter." he focused back on you, the intensity of his gaze startling you. "i need your help."
