Chapter 7

-Flashback-

Jessabelle's POV

It was probably that day, the day that I met him, that changed my life. I was scared, terrified of what will happen to my beloved sister Olivia. She is ill again. We were playing hide and seek when she suddenly collapsed on the floor. Her breathing became uneven. She's having difficulty breathing. I carried my six-year-old sister and ran to the house. Even though we were only a year apart, she was two times smaller than me. Olivia has always been weak and frail ever since she was born, but there's nothing we can do for her. We were poor. Mama quickly fed her the herbal medicine as soon as I laid her on the bed. I called for grandma and she was on her way. What can I do to help? I'm feeling helpless. Ah... maybe I can gather more herbal leaves from the garden and make a wish with the clover that I grow there! Maybe... just maybe, Olivia will be fine again.

I dash into the forest behind the house and to my secret hideout. That's the place where I plant things for Olivia. It's also a place where I can escape to when things are bad at home. Papa is a heavy drinker and when he gets too drunk, he gets physically abusive towards me. He would beat me senseless and act like nothing happened the following day. Olivia spends most of her days at grandma's so she's safe. I have to work and my house is near to the farm, so I couldn't be with my sister on some days. Every time papa comes home drunk or attempts to beat me, the secret hideout is where I run to. That's the only place no one can find me. Even papa.

"Argh!" As I was reaching the secret hideout, there was a black-haired boy wearing a dark green vest standing, facing the lake. He seemed frustrated. He clenched his fist, breathing heavily, his face red all the while staring out to the lake. Judging from his clothing, he must be the only child of the Portman family. Everyone in town knows them. He was wearing expensive shoe and clothes. "Everyone can just die!" He grumbled.

He started kicking the plants on the ground. I crept in behind the bushes to get a clearer view. His eyes are red, a clear sign that he's been crying moments ago. What happened to him? He continued stomping on the plants and realization soon struck me. That's Olivia's clover! I stormed out of the bushes, startling him as I approached him. I grit my teeth, holding back my anger and the urge to slap him.

"How dare you! That's Olivia's clover!" Tears streamed down my face. He blinked and looked at me in confusion. "I know that we are poor and we cannot afford to send her to the clinic. That is why I planted those herbs and clovers hoping that it might help even just a little even though I know it won't, but now because of you, I can't even try can I!!"

He looked down at the plants that he destroyed. Guilt was soon portrayed across his face. "What have I done?" he looked at me with regret.

I started to bawl my eyes out soon after. He took off his vest and handed it to me. "Hang on to this for me."

Eh? I was confused at first. He crouched down to the ground and started to dig up the destroyed plants with his bare hands. Pulling the roots with extreme care. He was gentle, careful. His pale hand soon turned brown, tainted by the soil. "W-what are you doing?!" I tried to stop him, but he wouldn't budge.

He placed the plant in his vest, covering the roots gently and securely in his arms. He didn't give a care about his soiled hands and dirty clothes. "I'll revive this plant. No matter what it takes, I'll do it." He looked at me, determined.
