Adolescence is a complicated time. Most teenagers go through an awkward phase of figuring out who they are, what they're going to be, and where they fit into the world. The year is 1992 and Cassidy Tippens O'Neal is a fifteen year old boy attending the eighth grade for the second time -after getting expelled for fighting with two other boys- in the small town of Garden City, Kansas. The boys he fought were actually bullying Cassie because they found out he was dating a jock on the football team. Sadly enough, the jock outright denied the relationship, leaving Cassie to deal with the shaming by himself. Since beating the living hell out of the bullies, Cassie has done his best to earn a reputation as a bully himself. In his mind, this is better than being known as "The Gay Boy".
Dennis Ross Manchester is an intelligent and short statured thirteen year old that has been taking care of his brother since he was five when he lost his mother due to a terminal illness. Following her death, he and his family moved around so much that he hasn't even finished an entire school year at any school since kindergarten. It's the first day of the new school year and the only bullying problem Cassidy has, is himself. So things seem to be looking up for him. Little does he know how much he'll enjoy looking down this year.
