It was a call he was not expecting...
Devi.
He had been sitting at his study table, trying to completing his homework... trying... not that he was getting much of it done... not with the constant thoughts overtaking his mind of what had happened earlier that afternoon when he had kissed her... again....thoughts also of their upcoming trip to Malibu in three days overwhelming his mind...
And it were really impeding his ability to focus on his stack of homework... then come the thoughts flooding his mind again...Her name displays, clear and visible on his phone. Clear.
At first he freezes, just staring at it... then his hand reaches out and snatches it off his table. He hasnt seen her name on his phone since they had first broke up...
His hands tremble... his unsure what she had wanted... or needed to say... and that scares him...
His phone vibrates in his hand as he braces himself to pick up.He only thinks about Malibu... about how she had smelt of the ocean... how she had felt in his arms... how she had ran her delightful devine fingers gently along the side of his face smoothly, like the texture of silk...
He jolts himself back to the present, and quickly picks up, not giving his tremoring hands another second to hesitate.
"Hi." He says quickly, as his heart sank for the couple of seconds of silence before she speaks... it's as though it wanted to stop for the sheer moment of apprehension he'd felt before he could hear her voice... When she speaks, Ben's heart begins to pick up pace again.
"Hey." She says softly... and then he hears that sniffle... that sniffle that making his heart want to beat differently.
"Devi?" He questions, confused. "Are you ok?"
"I... I..." she tries, but she cant seem to get her words out. There is an awkward silence for a couple of seconds, when Ben can hear as her breathing becomes heavier on the other side. She groans. "Never mind, I don't know why I called you, Ben. Sorry." And she doesn't even give him one second, not even one to answer... hanging up immediately. Ben's heart drops.
Shit shit shit, no no no, his mind races... His hands fumble, dailing in her number awkwardly, desparately pushing in those numbers, then let's it ring, pressing it to his ear. He hears on as it rings and rings... and rings... and she doesn't pick up...
So he tries again. On his third attempt with no success, he knows what he needs to do... go out to try to find her...
He grabs his jacket, shoving it on, and grabs his car keys. He dashes down the stairs, and heads for the car.Moments later he has arrived and sits outside her house. Gathering up some confidence he notices the one light on in the living room.
His nervous. And he fidgets with his hands. But eventually he has gathered enough confidence to step out of his car. He takes long strides toward her porch, a momentum that would prevent himself from swiveling himself back toward his car again... making sure he doesnt give himself time to think twice. As he reaches the front door, he knocks and waits impatiently, wringing his hands.
As he looks around he thinks of the last time he had been here... how he had kissed Devi... his heart pounding to the memory... but he feels as his palm sweat even more...
Kamala arrives within seconds, pulling him out of his thoughts as she opens the front door. She looks suprised to see Ben standing there.
"Ben?" She questions.
"Hi. Is Devi home?"
"No Ben. She left an hour ago to go to her band practice rehearsal. To practice for their upcoming band performance tonight. Did she not invite you? Nalini and I will show up alittle later."
His smile grows, giving her a thankful nod, before he spins on his heel and heads toward his car.
"Thanks Kamala. I just need to talk to her quickly." He says, as he gets to his car. Kamala gazes on puzzled.
"O-oh. Ok Ben." She says, uncertainty in her tone. "Y-you go do that." She says looking on puzzled, and awkwardly heads back into the house.
His already inside his car. He knows where to find her.The sky were gray, the clouds threatening to pour with rain.
As he exits his car, it doesn't take Ben long to find Devi sitting on the curb of the sidewalk, outside near the parking lot. She sits, hands cupping her face, looking as though she had been sobbing for a while.
