Chapter 6: Purple suits you
"So you can just turn invisible whenever you want? That's so secret agent, like you could just spy on people all the time! You're like a...a... Hobbit!" Drew noted with a flourish "You know, like in Lord of the Rings?"
"Shut it, you! I'm not that short, we can't all be giants ..." Stella retorted grumpily.
"Aw, don't feel bad, Frodo" he replied, reaching over and patting her head, ignoring her irritated growl.
The five teenagers were all lounging in Anna's living room. Stella had just finished explaining her powers, after listening to each person's story, including Anna's newfound discovery. They had arranged to meet here that morning because none of them wanted their parents to know about their powers just yet (or ever!) and Anna's house would be empty that day. She had felt a bit uncomfortable inviting so many people (and they were practically strangers) into her house, but Anna was desperate to find out more about what was happening to them. Besides, they all seemed pretty nice so far; Stella was lying across the couch eating all the popcorn Anna had made, she and Chloe occupied cushions on the floor, Jay was spinning crazily around on a stool dragged in from the kitchen and Drew was sprawled lazily in an armchair, throwing popcorn at him. No one was speaking for the moment, then, Stella popped out of sight with a "Whoops-a-daisy!" Jay, who was nearest to her, yelped, and was so surprised he lost his balance on the revolving barstool and it tipped over backwards. Somehow, he was able to spring off backwards at the last moment, land on his hands, flip over, and land nimbly with both feet perched precariously on the arm of the couch. Apparently, Jay had surprised Stella too, because the popcorn bowl, which had been lying on her (now invisible) stomach, went flying and scattered popcorn everywhere, before finally crashing onto Drew, who yelled, then vanished and reappeared on the other side of the room, swearing and shaking popcorn out of his hair. The cat gave them all a baleful meow and remained perched stiffly on the bookshelf. Everyone looked surprised for a moment, but it didn't last long, soon, they were all roaring with laughter.
"Sorry, about that you guys," Stella giggled "I wasn't really paying attention and I wanted to try disappearing again, I did mean to warn you."
"Yeah that might have been nice to know before I went all Star Trek." Drew quipped
"Dude, that was awesome though!" Jay replied
"But that was so cool the way you just flipped off that chair! Like freaking Batman or something!" Drew said
"Yeah, that was cool! How did you do that?" Anna asked, slightly jealous
Jay looked vaguely uncomfortable, but was saved answering by Chloe, who said,
"We've both been doing gymnastics for a couple years, but neither of us was ever that good! Maybe it's the powers or something that's made him better?" She paused, thinking, then went on, "We should try out our powers guys!" Chloe turned to Stella "I want to see you go invisible again, it was so cool the way you just disappeared, Stella! Like that!"
Chloe snapped her fingers as she said this, and suddenly, a spark popped out from between her fingers as though struck by a match. It danced across her fingers, leaping merrily as it cast its sparkling glow across her hand. Then, it rolled onto her palm, and Chloe quickly closed her fingers, allowing the spark to go out with a soft pop.
"Woah..." She murmured, dumbstruck for the moment.
"Anyway," Anna said, "I really want to try out our powers more too, but I think our priority right now should be to find the two other people that I saw, you know, in my vision. They might have powers too and they're probably pretty confused, we should clue them in, right?"
