-Sleeping at Last, Turning Page"We are gathered here today, for the renewal of vows between man and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Todoroki-"
Enji squeezed your hand and his chest is ladden with a weight he cannot name, yet he is in a daze, he is afraid this is a dream. If it is, and he is awoken in a reality without you, he will raze the ground in a fit of madness.
You touch his cheek fondly. Your husband turns to you, eyes finally in focus; slowly, he smiles along with a sigh of relief. The light from the stained window hits your visage just so. And he is enchanted all over again. The creases by your eyes or the wrinkles that show due to aging and yet... and yet he finds no ugliness there nor fading beauty, but a testament of time, the creases and wrinkles tells him that you stayed with him all this time, that you have accompanied him through time. There is no waning of love here. Age has only unmasked all facets of a significant other. This is true triumph. And Enji luckily happened to it.
Coughs.
"If Mr. Todoroki could read the vow he has written," said the priest.
The guests laughed as Enji's cheeks warmed at being called attention for staring too long. Also, there's nothing wrong with it anyway. He's married to you and it's his second wedding with you so it is within his right to look.
Your husband takes out a paper from his pocket and unfolds it. He begins to read,
"Do you know that I wouldn't have fallen for you, if you had a terrible attitude?"
Cue laughter. Enji didn't intend it to be funny but somehow it makes the guests laugh. He forgives it though because you giggled causing the stampede in his stomach akin to butterflies.
"So my dear wife, I hope you won't wonder why I fell for you."
You smiled at him, grinning really. Your cheeks will hurt but you can't help it. He is endearing and dapper. Damn it, it's impossible not to smile.
"For a long time, I have chased triumph not even understanding what it means. The triumph of being a number one hero. For a long time, I believed that that was it. Until you. And Touya. Fuyumi. Natsuo. And Shoto. My shrew of a wife and the little ingrates."
You laughed especially hearing Enji's best man, Touya shout, "Hey!!"
"There was no joy or triumph being number one hero, only the weight of the burden that comes with it. Triumph is when Touya's first word was 'dad.' It is winning the three-legged race with Fuyumi. Natsuo coming to me for advice. Getting to hold little Shoto without him crying. You..." Enji trails off and gently takes your left hand, kissing your knuckles whilst staring into your eyes. "I realize I am only triumphant when with you."
There is a lump in your throat now. Your eyes start to become misty but you keep the tears at bay, with no small effort.
"Trust that from now on, my love is yours. It was yours before, and it will continue to be yours 'til we are all but words inscribed on a headstone." He chuckles at the sight of your lovely face turning into a blubbering mess. " So drape your dreams on me, I vow to fulfill them. What I have to give will never be lacking. Surrender your fears, I promise I'll have faith. Be rest assured, I am still and will always be yours."
You tried to be tough, to not cry but Enji's vow blasted your resolve into smithereens. Your tears streamed down your cheeks and he smiled helplessly, wiping them with both his thumbs, gently cradling your face.
"Mrs. Todoroki, your vow please." The priest prompted softly, just as touched as everyone present upon hearing the Flame Hero's vow.You cleared your throat and kissed both the inside of Enji's palms, you let them go and Fuyumi, your maid of honor, hands you the paper. You began to read,
"Nobody knows just how we're able to stand here today. It could be fate or Kami." You smiled, feeling a bit cheesy. "Somehow, our lives intertwined. I didn't think this would come to me. The man I first met isn't flawless and I daresay, more trouble than its worth. But you won me over. You were clumsy in your affections and then somehow, we met halfway and began to listen to each other. Thank you. Now that I think about it, I made you wait alot: for me to reciprocate your feelings, for my forgiveness, and for me to wake up. Enji, thank you for waiting. Always."
Your tears were streaming non-stop now. "So even when nothing seems clear, I promise to be your refuge from the sheer weight of your doubts and fears, and burdens, your wounded and weary heart.
I promise to be your refuge
even when the light disappears,
And even when this world's insincereI promise you will find respite in my arms, through the cold nights when sleep is hard to come by.
And when no one understands,
Count on it that you have my faith.
So be rest assured to place your heart in my hands,
I vow that it will be safe here just as mine is with yours. Forevermore."The church fell silent for a few moments save for a few sniffles. The solemn ambiance was interrupted with the priest's voice cutting through, "Now that the vows have been renewed, you may now exchange rings."
Little Shoto waddles towards you and presents the rings, eyes shining looking at you because mommy looks very beautiful and then he stares at his dad, stoic and unimpressed. Enji took his time with slipping the ring on your finger. A flash of the first wedding. His parents and yours were the only witness as you two bowed to each other. It fills him with sadness. He will spend the rest of his life making it up to you. You take the ring from Shoto, pressing your lips to his cheek, and slips the ring on Enji's finger. Your eyes trembled upon looking at your husband's turquoise ones. You and Enji had never exchanged 'I love yous' before but surely he must know... the purpose of this ceremony is to let him know.
"Friends and family, we have heard their vows anew, witnessed their exchange of rings and so this ceremony will end... Mr. and Mrs. Todoroki, you may now kiss."
You peered up to your husband, your chest seemed to burst with overflowing affection and who knew you'd experience happiness, so much of it, that it makes your fragile beating heart ache? Your eyes still misty, Enji tilts your chin upwards with his one hand in a tender fashion while the other wraps your waist. The world faded as your lips and his met. It was a moment that seemed longer despite being chaste.
