The warm sunlight felt wonderful on my skin as we ran through the door to the outside. I felt some of the strain lifted away as I finally escaped the energies that had me feeling scared and trapped. Now, we only had one more problem between us and freedom.

"So you finally decided to make your way out here to me," came an all too familiar voice. "It's a good thing, too. I was starting to get bored."

I faced forward, and there he was.

"Nathaniel."

He gave an evil smile. "You almost look like you didn't see this coming, creature."

I ignored his comment. Why was he standing out here all by himself? "Where are your demons hiding? I can sense them. I know they're here."

"I'm well aware of your abilities. I did run all those tests on you. It feels like just yesterday, I was reaching-"

"That's enough!" Alex shouted from beside me. He was fuming with rage. "You will not get the chance to lay another finger on her, I swear it!"

Nathaniel smirked. "Oops. It seems I struck a nerve. Do you not want to hear the story of how I met this monster? Perhaps you'd rather hear the tale of when I stabbed her through with a sword?"

Alex was practically growling. I reached out a hand and placed it on his arm, preventing him from doing anything reckless.

"I didn't know you were so proud of your moment of weakness," I called out, trying to distract him from provoking Alex further. "You were going to kill me then, but you hesitated and stabbed my stomach. Or is that not how you remember it?"

Nathaniel snarled, clearly not happy I was interrupting his game. "Silence, monster. I didn't kill you then because I had another idea." He gestured wide. "All this that I've done, watching the agony on your face... It's all been so much fun."

His words hurt. A lot. I felt myself gulp down my unease, the nausea that came with his words. He'd been planning all of this... for that long?

A hand grabbed my wrist. I looked up to see Alex had used his free hand to attempt to comfort me. Another moment passed, and I felt Finny take my other hand in his.

Nathaniel leered at us.

Samantha stepped forward then. "What I want to know is why you hate Selena so much? You work with demons, but you want Selena dead? It doesn't make any sense!"

He looked at Samantha, clearly beginning to lose what little patience he had. "Simple. Your kind, little lady, has existed for eons. It's named in all of the religious texts, in mythology, and so on. Same goes for angels." He turned his gaze back to me. "It's kind is not. It's a freak of nature, something that should have never existed in this world. A fluke."

"And what has you so hellbent on killing my sister?" Alex spoke up. "We're the same. Why only her?"

Nathaniel sneered at him. "Jealous?"

Alex scowled, and I gripped his arm tighter.

"I simply met this monster first. I'll destroy it, and then move on to you." Nathaniel stopped for a second, clearly thinking about something. "You know... This one here is clearly defective. Perhaps I'll kill it quickly and take you back for more experiments..."

At that, something in me snapped. I was no longer afraid. All I could think about was making sure this man never laid his hands on my brother.

I shook off the hands holding mine, then quickly spread my wings and flew up, only to quickly turn back down, like a hawk chasing its prey.

"Yeah, Selena! Kick his butt!" Serena cheered.

I sped toward Nathaniel, arms outstretched, ready to get my hands on him wherever I could, when I sensed something to my left. I dodged quickly as someone tried to attack me in the air. I remained up while the demon fell back to the ground.

I took deep breaths. I was not doing well, and getting angry and taking off hadn't helped, but I refused to land on the ground, knowing what would be waiting for me. Slowly, I glared down at Nathaniel and his demon.

"What's the matter? You wanted to keep your lackeys locked away until you got scared?"

Nathaniel scowled, while his demon just stood there, appearing to be awaiting orders.

"Hey, are you okay up there?" Alex asked.

I looked down at him, and even from so far up, I could see the worry clear on his face. Samantha and Finny both looked up at me with similar expressions, but they seemed to be more concerned with the threats on the ground with them.

I shook my head. I won't last long up here.

"Selena, let me help you," Serena pleaded.

But what if-

"You won't. I won't let you."

All I could do was nod. Serena seemed to sigh in relief as I trusted her, and before I knew it, my body felt warm, and I could tell my wings had begun to glow as I closed my eyes, preparing to relinquish control to Serena. What happened instead had me confused.

I felt my strength returning quickly, any pain I'd been feeling was gone, and I had so much energy. Confused and scared, I called out to Serena once again.

Serena, what are you doing?!

"Shush. It's the same thing I did last time. Don't worry, I'll keep enough to cheer you on."

"Hey, Selena!" Alex chimed in, clearly worried about why I was suddenly glowing. "What's happening?"

I soon felt the flow of energy slow to a stop, and heard Serena speak through a smirk, "Now, let me repeat: kick his butt."

I smiled as I turned my gaze to Alex. I'm alright now, so let's 'kick his butt.'"
