(Sorry for the wait. I hop you enjoy.)
I held on tight to Finny as we ran through the halls, Alex leading the way as he searched for an exit through all the energies in the building. I wanted to help, but there was nothing I could do. I'd used all my strength already. I was just a burden now.
I quickly shook my head, attempting to clear it of the negative thoughts. I was no burden. Soon I would take my medicine, and I'd be able to help them again. Hopefully I'll never have to, though. I don't want any of us to be in this kind of danger ever again.
It was several long minutes before everyone stopped moving. When I looked up to see why, my heart jumped.
There was a door at the end of the hall. One with a window. I could see the blue sky. I could see trees in the distance. I wanted to be hopeful, but there was something that was preventing me from it.
Alex and Samantha turned to face me and Finny. "We made it to the end," Samantha said with a sigh of relief.
"It's not over yet," I whispered.
Samantha and Alex both looked to me, nodding. They felt it, too. The amount of energy that had been surrounding us had grown. Either these walls were even more protected, or there were demons waiting for us outside that door. We all seemed to be preparing for the latter, as none of the energies felt very friendly.
"Do you think the door will have an alarm?" Finny asked, holding me tighter.
I shook my head. "I don't think so. What would be the point when everyone is already waiting for us on the other side?"
"Do you really think so? All of them are out there?" Samantha asked, and I could sense her anxiety.
I nodded. "We haven't seen anyone this entire time. Surely they're all waiting for us to use up our strength escaping and not have any left to fight them when we get outside." I stopped for a minute, then added, "It worked for me, at least, and I know Alex is tired after leading us here. I wonder if they would ambush us if we rested here for a few minutes."
"We could all use a break," Samantha added. "If they haven't come for us yet, then surely they're waiting. I say we take a few minutes here to prepare ourselves."
"We all need to get some strength back," Alex agreed.
"Alright then, I guess we're taking a break," Finny said.
With that decided, we all sat on the floor, all of us staying away from the walls and the door we'd found. Finny kept a protective arm around me while I rested my head on his shoulder.
Serena, I'm not sure we can do this. Do you think Dad knows what's happened by now?
"Surely someone at that large manor has noticed we're gone. I'm not sure they would be able to get a hold of Dad to tell him, though. He didn't tell any of us where he was going."
I sighed inwardly. Do you think Maria knows?
"Maybe, but she wouldn't know how to find us." She paused for a second, then said, "Selena, listen to me. You can't always depend on others to save you. We can do this. Together. I know you're at your limit, but I'm here to help you. Remember that."
A small smile appeared on my lips. Thank you.
The silence resumed in the hallway and my mind, everyone preparing themselves, maybe thinking up strategies for how to defend ourselves or escape. After a while, a new voice entered my head.
"How are you feeling?" Alex's voice asked.
I don't know, I replied. Serena's been trying to boost my confidence, but I'm not sure it's working.
"Just hang in there. As soon as you think you're strong enough, we'll go and get this over with."
Alex-
"I know. All I want is to know you'll be able to defend yourself. You don't need to fight back if you don't feel like you can. You can leave that to the rest of us."
I closed my eyes and sighed. Alright.
Alex didn't say anything else, but I could feel him smiling at me. It made me feel warm inside. I was happy because my brother was happy. And after what he and Serena both told me, suddenly I was feeling much more confident about our upcoming battle than before.
After another ten minutes or so, I heard someone move. I opened my eyes to see Samantha was standing.
"We've waited here long enough. Let's hurry up and finish this so we can all go home."
My gaze went to Alex, and he was clearly staring at me, waiting to see if I protested. I just nodded to him, sitting up and standing.
"Selena-" Finny started.
"No, Samantha's right. We should hurry. I'll be okay. I have enough strength back to at least take care of myself. I won't be of much use fighting anyone, but..."
Samantha walked over to me then and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Leave that to us. As long as you can keep yourself alive, we'll all be just fine."
I smiled at her, nodding. "I can manage that much."
She smiled, then turned to the boys. "Alright then. You heard her. Let's go."
Finny and Alex looked to each other, then to me. I took Finny's hand, then sent my message to Alex. We can do this. I'm ready.
He gave me a small smile, then nodded. We all looked to each other one last time, then turned toward the door, hurrying to get through it and back into the sunlight to finally face our problems once and for all.
