I gave chase. Alex and Finny both yelled after me, but I didn't listen. I was not going to let this man get away. He was not going to ruin my life any further.

Nathaniel looked over his shoulder, his face turned even more fear stricken than before, and he ran faster. I matched his speed. He was not going anywhere. He was mine.

Selena... I heard Serena say softly. Was she worried about me? I would be fine.

"Here lies Nathaniel," I heard myself call out. "A liar and a sociopath, he decided at a young age to marry the first woman he met who didn't think his experiments were crazy. But it turns out he chose a woman with a brain and a heart, because she chose to protect the subject of his experiments rather than see her die. She divorced him over it, and it drove Nathaniel mad. He started hunting the creature, confirming to himself his lunacy the whole time. This is what eventually led to his untimely death."

Nathaniel screamed in terror.

It was then that I appeared before him, earning another shout in fear. "He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his ex wife Maria, the grim reaper, and their son Peter." I felt myself smirk. "And his test subject, who had been right under his nose several times, but he'd never had the courage to kill." I leaned in closer to him. "I swear to you, I won't make that same mistake."

His eyes were so full of fear, and I could tell he wanted to plead for his life, but couldn't operate his own body.

Oh well.

It was then that I quickly shot my arm through his body, piercing his heart with my nails. He let out a muffled scream and a cough, before his limp body fell from my arm and onto the ground.

I stared at his body for a while, as if I had to confirm he would not be standing again. After a while, I felt myself start to sway.

I fell backward, but someone was there to catch me.

In front of me, I saw Maria. She was looking down at her dead ex husband, her eyes solemn as she pulled out a notebook and began to write in it, her scythe tucked carefully under her arm.

My vision blurred, and I felt lightheaded and weak. When I looked behind me, I smiled.

"Dad."

His arms wrapped around me protectively as I felt myself succumb to darkness.

Third Person POV:

As Maria took notes on Nathaniel's death in her To-Die List, Sebastian embraced his daughter's unconscious form and inspected the scene.

Nathaniel's corpse lay a few feet away, a large hole in his chest. Selena lay in his arms, her right arm covered in blood up to her elbow. He smiled. She'd finally won.

There was movement behind him, so Sebastian turned his head in time to see Alex, Samantha, and Finny all running toward him.

"Sebastian!" Finny and Samantha both exclaimed.

"What happened?" was all he asked.

The two began to explain the situation while Alex moved around them and approached his sister. Her breathing was beginning to grow ragged again, as it had back when she'd been at her sickest, and one light touch of her cheek confirmed she was indeed running a fever.

As the two finished recalling the day's events to his father, he finally spoke. "We need to get her back."

Sebastian turned to him, then looked down at his daughter again before nodding. He then turned to Maria. "I'll leave you to take care of this."

She looked up and smiled, taking her scythe from under her arm and into her hands. "Sure. Just have to note his record and then I'll be heading back myself. The wilderness can have his body. From dust to dust and all that."

Sebastian could easily see through her smile. She was going to mourn her husband for a moment, then probably proceed to bury him. As terrible a human he may have been, at one point, she had loved him.

He then stood, lifting his daughter into his arms as he did so. Her black and white wings were both still out, which wasn't an issue for Sebastian to carry her, but it would be difficult to take her through town and get her back inside the manor.

He turned to the group of children around him. "I'm taking her back to the demon estate. I'll drop her off there, and then I am afraid I must return to my master. I will leave Selena in your hands."

Samantha and Alex both nodded, while Finny saluted. Sebastian then turned back to Maria. "Once you are finished here, please bring Selena the medicine as soon as possible." His face turned grim as he looked down at his daughter once more. "She hasn't been this bad since she was young. I fear she may not have much time left."

Before anyone could utter another word, he was gone.

Everyone's faces went white with sudden shock and fear. They had all known that Selena's illness had been potentially deadly, and that Selena had been trying to prepare everyone for her possible end, but hearing Sebastian admit that he thought his daughter was dying only confirmed in their minds how serious her situation truly was. Selena was dying.

Maria spoke up first. "Go on now. I'll be right behind you. Make sure she's comfortable until I arrive."

The three nodded, then ran off after Sebastian, pleading that Selena could hold on just a little longer.
