Mayu
"Mayu, Mayu Handa, that's my name."
And that's how I started telling my name to a dragon, let's back up a bit from here. Like I said earlier, my name is Mayu Handa, I'm a 16 year old highschool student in Kyoto. I'd say that I'm a perfectly normal Japanese highschool student, without any particular care in the world. April 19th was the day that a passing comet that nobody saw coming flew through most of Japan besides northern Hokkaido. "The comet had no real meaning" were the meteorologists deceiving and sly words on the news. I believed the report but still had an urge to check it out. After school that next evening, I went home, grabbed a bottle of water off of my kitchen counter, and went off on my journey. Telling my mom goodbye totally slipped my mind but it should be fine, because my dad lives very close to the crash site, so I could always go there if I needed to. The site in which the comet crashed was about two hours from my suburban home in the busiest part of Kyoto, on the summit of Mount Ibuki. It would take me a while to get to the top, because the tour only took you about three quarters of the way up. I didn't know if it was illegal to go to the summit, I didn't really care either, I don't know why but I was getting to the top and seeing that comet. Was it excitement or curiosity that came over me? Or was it just fate leading me astray in my every move. Whatever the strange sensation that had come over me, I carried on through the Kyoto railway and took the bullet train to the nearest town of Maibara, then walked the remaining miles to the base of the mountain. I checked my phone to see if tours were still running, it would make it much easier if the tour could get me most of the way up. I doubted they would, knowing my luck, and yeah was I right. Tours not only were closed but they had the mountain blocked off completely with a ton of police cars in front of it. That wouldn't mean I would give up, I'd just push past the police, if I had a fate to go up there, that fate would let me pass by, was what I thought. Who knew that fate would become all too real on that warm, Kyoto evening. It was around six o'clock by the time I got to the entrance of the mountain. The internet was definitely right, nothing was getting by there. I stopped to grab a bite to eat at the nearest confectionary with the little money I had remaining to contemplate what to do. I took my meal to Sannomiya Shrine to confront the help of the gods in my journey. If I got caught, I'd probably just have to go in for a quick questioning session then go back home. So it wasn't that big of a loss either way but I still wanted to see that comet. I couldn't tell you why, there had been other comets that had run by in my lifetime, this one just felt special. I guess that I had found myself on a date with destiny, or a dragon, it depends on the way you look at it...
Right in front of the mountain, this was my time, the time to be alive, the time to run up this mountain 'till my legs fall off. Maybe the track team will pay off after all, huh? I'll have to thank Mr. Yamuichi later if I make it out alive, what am I saying, there's nothing that big on the line here right? I sprinted past the yellow line, but the police saw me instantly and came running at me to stop me. I don't know what got into my head today, but I've still got it in my head! I calmed my breathing and my running and came to a full stop. I don't know how my mind knew what I needed to do, but I'll take this stroke of luck. I got in a fighting stance, though I wasn't strong, so why did my mind tell me to? I decided to trust my mind and my instincts and stuck with it. They came at me trying to get me out of the yellow line but in about 5 seconds they were all lying on the ground with blood on their faces. My speed was like nothing that I'd ever seen, same with my power, and I thought I held back. I'll ask someone about it later, I thought. This wasn't the time to be sitting here thinking, this was the time to be booking it up this mountain before I get classified as a fugitive. I sprinted up at speeds that I didn't think were even possible before, and made it to the top of the mountain in around five minutes. There were most definitely signs of a huge comet there, as there were holes in the mountain. Dialing the mountain's height down by at least a couple feet. At the very edge of the mountain's peak, there was something I think nobody but destiny itself expected to see, a yellow and white dragon, asleep on the mountain top. One eye opened and saw me. It startled me and I proceeded to walk back slowly.
"Sorry, you come all the way back up here and I startle you down, I know what will make this better!"
Wait... did that dragon just talk? Slowly a light erupted throughout the dragon's body, it shrunk and came into a human form.
We sat down on the grass of the snowy peak, I didn't mind the cold and I doubted he did either if he was sleeping up here. He explained that his name was Shiryu Bushida, and that he couldn't tell you how he got here, when I asked, because he doesn't exactly know himself, were his words. I don't know why I myself didn't just run away, it wasn't my problem, just something about him drew me to him, and I couldn't tell myself what it was. Now we're back to the present day, where I just told a dragon my name, and we're sprinting down the mountain together, keeping each other's pace. He was fast, with short blond hair that blew through the wind. I didn't know how old he was, I didn't ask, because it probably would have been something confusing in dragon years or something.
"Something you should probably know since we're almost to the bottom, I think I'm a fugitive now for crossing those barriers." I said.
"Fugitive? That means a criminal of some sort, right?"
he replied with a puzzled look.
"Yeah, someone who's done a wrong and most likely has a warrant placed upon them for arrest."
He didn't know that much Japanese apparently, probably just learning after being transported from another world with who knows what language they speak there. We reached the bottom, and there were so many armed men there I didn't even think that I could count them.
"I sensed an unknown presence from that mountain, then a power surge here by a girl. Who even knows what about the other guy. Maybe the source of that unknown presence"
said the guy in the front who looked to be the leader of these forces, he looked to be unarmed though, which surprised me.
"Let me handle this, I won't kill any of them if I hold back in my dragon form. I'm not sure what I can do in this human form, but I'm not sure this is the place to try."
Shiryu said to me quietly. Shiryu focused his power to try to turn into his dragon form but... it didn't work. A scowl whipped across his face and he cursed at the ground.
"Don't give them time to react! Fire now, dead or alive they will be taken into custody!"
said the burly man hence-forth. I heard the sound of the first shot, and many came after it. I could sense it all with this newly acquired power. Shiryu seemed to have given up on changing into his dragon form, so he pulled out the sword from the sheath on his back that I didn't even notice was there. He took a deep breath and charged at the bullets. What in the hell was he doing? Did he have a death wish? He said he would handle it but I'm not sure if it's possible to handle that many people.
I had to trust him here, since both of our lives were dependant that his plan, whatever it may be, will work.
