A Sunny Day

''GO! GO! GO!''

I feel my heart thumping throughout my whole body, small droplets of sweat have formed on my forehead. My clothes feel disgusting and sticky, stuck onto my body.

''Please, I can't anymore,'' I say, out of breath. I let my body fall on the not-so-soft green grass. It's summer, the summer after high school. I think it's around July, a Thursday maybe? Who keeps track of what day it is during summer vacation anyway. The grass prickles in my skin.

''Yes, you can, sidekick!'' I push the hair that fell on my face away. It's full of gross grass. The sun is so bright, I have to keep blinking to try and get even a glimpse of it. A hand reaches out to me and pulls me out of my daze.

''I thought we were only going to be doing pushups..'' I grab the hand and get back on my feet. ''Not running.'' I've never been very keen on sports, Kaito has changed that a bit I suppose. I wouldn't say I truly enjoy it, but it does make me feel stronger. He puts a hand on my shoulder and gives me a gigantic smile. ''Fine, fine, fine. We'll stop for now but tomorrow we're gonna continue!'' He hands me a bottle of water and I gulp it down. Kaito really does love exercising. I didn't have that many plans for this vacation anyway so I don't mind. While packing up his stuff, he puts a bit of gel in his hair. He truly does love his hair, I have to admit it is impressive how it stays up like that. Sort of like it's floating in space.

Kaito has always been my closest friend, ever since the beginning of High School. We used to do all kinds of projects together, I was so glad to have someone I could go to for those group projects we were forced to do. Never been a fan of those. We sat at lunch together and he somehow convinced me to go to gym class with him. I remember being terrified for months of being judged for my physical condition or just simply.. my face? That never happened though, and if something small even looked like it; Kaito stood up to them for me. People have always looked up to him. For his cheery attitude and well length. Although he was quite the social butterfly, he spent a lot of time with me. I've always appreciated him as a friend, he's been a great support to me. Thankfully we will be going to the same university so we'll stay together. He's gonna be a bit of a tough roommate I suspect though. Apart from his hair, he's not very precise nor.. clean.

We walk away from the field together with our bags over our shoulders. ''Wanna get some ice cream? After we get changed.'' I say. Kaito's face seems to light up. ''Of course.''

He's always been a slow dresser. Probably cause he insists on wearing two jackets - with no sleeves it is summer after all - it looks kinda silly, but I suppose that fits him. While waiting outside the changing stall I grab my phone and decide to check if I have any notifications. It's kinda hard to see in the sunlight but with my hat on it sort of works. I see one from my University, Shima University, about orientation day.

I follow a few courses that lead up to being a detective. Criminal justice as an example. My dream isn't necessarily to be a detective, it's just that I'm not that extraordinary in anything else. I don't even think I'm that great, my dad has always been saying I am but he's biased by the fact he used to be a detective himself. Kaito is much more passionate about going to University than I am, he wants to be an astronaut after all. I'd rather look at the stars with my feet on the safe, earth ground.

I hear the door clack. ''Hey, sidekick! Did I take too long?''

''Not longer than usual'' I give a slight smile.

''Oh, what's that? Orientation day? What does it say?''

''I don't know yet, I haven't opened it.''

I open the email. Most of it is are things I already know, the date, the time, the location. However, the email ends with a few sentences I hadn't heard earlier about. ''ᴏᴜʀ ᴜɴɪᴠᴇʀꜱɪᴛʏ, ᴘʀᴏᴜᴅʟʏ ᴘʀᴇꜱᴇɴᴛꜱ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ᴄᴏʟʟᴀʙᴏʀᴀᴛɪɴɢ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀᴍᴇᴛʜʏꜱᴛɪ. ʏᴏᴜ ᴍᴜꜱᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʜᴇᴀʀᴅ ᴏꜰ ɪᴛ ʙᴇꜰᴏʀᴇ, ʙᴜᴛ ɪᴛ ɪꜱ ᴀ ᴄᴏᴍᴘᴀɴʏ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴋᴇᴇᴘꜱ ᴀ ɢᴏʀɢᴇᴏᴜꜱ ʏᴇʟʟᴏᴡ ᴄʀʏꜱᴛᴀʟ, ꜰᴏᴜɴᴅ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ 1600ꜱ. ᴡᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ʀᴇᴄᴇɪᴠɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ ɢᴏʟᴅᴇɴ ʙᴇᴀᴜᴛʏ, ᴀɴᴅ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ᴄᴇʀᴇᴍᴏɴʏ ꜰᴏʀ ɪᴛ ᴀʀᴏᴜɴᴅ 9'ᴏ ᴄʟᴏᴄᴋ. ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ꜱᴛᴜᴅᴇɴᴛ ɪꜱ ɪɴᴠɪᴛᴇᴅ, ɪɴᴄʟᴜᴅɪɴɢ ꜱᴏᴍᴇ ᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ɢᴜᴇꜱᴛꜱ.''

''I've never heard of that before what is it?''

I look at Kaito with widen eyes. You must be kidding me, WHAT? ''You seriously haven't heard of before?'' Kaito nods and notices the disbelief in my eyes. ''I've heard it's worth more than our hearts combined. About 540 million?'' I sigh.  ''It's from before the Egyptians!''

Kaito shrugs. ''It sounds fancy, will I get to wear my penguin suit? Actually no, no, no a red dress?''

I just saw Kaito in a red tight dress in my imagination, and truly I feel a little traumatized.

''Um... I think you can wear whatever but it is definitely fancy.''

He laughs and takes off my hat to ruffle my hair.

''I'm just kidding with ya, now let's go get that ice cream shall we?''

He runs away from me with top speed, signaling me to follow him. I'm not running after that, my legs are way too sore.
