I sit uncomfortably at a big round table surrounded by people I barely know filled with students. The smell of alcohol fills the air, the sound of laughter fills the room full of life. Apart from the university attenders interested enough to come, there are a lot of wealthier people or ones with a lot of fame. All dressed quite nicely. I recognize a few actors from shows I used to watch back in the day there is a wide variety of writers, musicians, artists and so much more. There's also a grand podium with velvet red curtains covering it.
My uncle waves at me across the room and pulls a thumb up. That's awfully embarrassing... I give him a small smile and focus my eyes on the table. A perfectly put triangle napkin grabs my eye. I play around with it, creating a little bird through origami. The cotton feels soft against my fingertips, they've put a lot of thought into it. Kaito ditched me a bit ago for a girl with red eyes and long pigtails. He left so abruptly, seemed like it was better for me to not come along. Since his absence, no one has approached me. Although I can't really say I've been trying to meet people either.
Orientation day didn't really go as planned. I went in with a lot of positivity, sure of meeting new friends and creating new memories. But my luck hasn't been going my way. The University had organized a few little games to get to know one another. We were divided into groups of around sixteen, Kaito being in another one. A small group of people who had already finished their studies helped us. They had introduced themselves, adding a fun fact each to their monologue. We were encouraged to do the same, but I chickened out. Maybe I'm better off hanging with Kaito whenever he has time for me.
I'm pulled out of my daze when I feel something- or someone bump against my shoulder.
''Hey! Hey! What you got there?''
A boy snatches my origami out of my fingers, inspecting it.
''That's cool!'' He grins at me, flashing a big smile. ''O-oh.. thank you?'' His purple locks dance around his face, kind of slapping me in the face when he turns.
''Can I keep it? Can I? Can I?'' He's a little childish, grabbing something I just made and asking to keep it. I can't help but notice his purple eyes, devilishly looking into mine. They're just a bit lighter than his hair. He squeezes his eyes a little, noticing I was staring I think. He's not embarrassed in the slightest, unlike me.
''A-ah.. sure? I suppose.'' I scratch my neck, looking away. ''Thank youuu~!'' He puts the little origami in his pocket, carefully not to crush it.
''Soo~ What's your name detective boy?'' His legs dangle from the chair. ''Uh well, It's Shuichi Saihara... what's yours?'' I will probably never meet someone here in a normal way. Aren't there any regular people here?
''What do you mean ''detective boy''?''
''I just figured you were one since that detective waved at you 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺! What a cute name though! I'll definitely remember saihara-san!''
I don't know how to react to that, no one has ever called my name cute before. Especially not a stranger. This guy creeps me out a bit. Why would he come to someone like me? Luckily I don't have to, because an upbeat song comes on that shifts his attention elsewhere.
His expression suddenly changes, from an exciting child-like smile to a dreadfully serious one. I stop looking his way, not wanting to make this situation even more uncomfortable.

People all around the people get up to dance, it likely being the last song of the night before the ceremony. The candles dance around as well, giving the room a sunny glow. Wait I haven't asked his name yet have I? I turn back just to realize the stranger already left.
I feel sorta disappointed, although I barely knew the boy he seemed interesting, to say the least.
''Sidekick! Hey!'' I shock up once I feel two hands grabbing my shoulders. The hands drag me without mercy to the dance floor.
Kaito starts dancing pretty aggressively, throwing his shoulders back and forth while seductively raising his eyebrows up and down. Nudging me to join in. My face cringes in disgust, I'd rather be found dead than reenact that monstrosity.
''I'll make coffee for you in the morning for a week!'' He grabs my arm, forcing me to go along with him. Rather be found dead? Who said that? Not me. I dance along, feeling myself loosen up to the music. Having a blast. Usually, I'm not the type to enjoy situations like these, but occasionally Kaito seems to miraculously take it out of me. I push my hair out of the face, sweat drops falling from my forehead.
The song ends and we step to the side. Feeling the adrenaline still flowing through my fingertips. I hope that people weren't staring at me. ''So have gotten any names of potential friends yet?''
I shake my head. ''I haven't gotten any names no, I also haven't really met anyone..'' I don't tell him about my encounter with the odd boy. I'll tell him later once I catch his name.. if I ever meet him again that is. ''What about you?''
''I met a quite feisty girl.'' Kaito laughs sorta shyly.
Before I can ask him any more questions the lights turn off except one on the podium. Revealing the golden beauty and a pretty girl with blonde hair and a pink dress next to it.
