Wednesday
"Harley!" Maya called from the bottom of the stairs but received no response, "Harley Jade!" She called again."I'm coming," the blonde reached the end of the stairs with her backpack slung over one shoulder, "where are my shoes?" She asked softly.
"Which ones? You have like twenty pairs," Maya laughed.
"My vans."
"They are next to the door so you can get them on the way out. We need to go now or we'll be late," Maya said.
"Okay," Harley picked her shoes up and carried them to the car and then put them on once she was in the car.
"Do you have anything exciting planned at school today?" Maya asked once they were in the car.
"Nope." Harley replied while tying her laces.
"Will you be okay walking to the station after school with Ads?" Maya asked while driving towards Harley's school.
"Yeah, I'll see you later. Love you," Harley said as she got out the car and picked her bag up.
"Love you, Princess," Maya said before Harley closed the door and the blonde drove to work.
..
At around 4pm, Maya was on the phone when her office door swung open and two teenage girls slumped down on the couch with their phones in their hands. "Thank you, Chief," Maya said into the phone, "Bye."
"Was that my dad?" Addie asked once Maya had put the phone down.
"It was and he is going to pick you up at six. How was school?" The blonde asked the two girls.
"Good, I have loads of homework to do though," Harley replied with a sigh.
"Can you get it done soon please because we won't be home until about eight-thirty," Maya said while signing her last few pieces of paperwork.
"Yes, I'll go do it now," Harley stood up with her bag and exited the office followed by Addie.
"See you later, Aunty Maya," Addie said with a smug smile.
"Goodbye Adelaide," Maya laughed.
..
At eight o'clock, Maya went upstairs into the common room to find her daughter curled up on a couch in a blanket with Dean and Travis, "Harls, are you ready to go home?" Maya asked from the doorway.
"Yep, bye Uncle Dean, bye Uncle Travis," she said as she stood up and discarded her blanket onto the couch.
"Bye, see you soon," Travis said as he also stood up and folded the blankets before going home.
"Bye guys, see you tomorrow, drive safe," Maya said as she put her hand on Harley's shoulder and directed her towards the stairs, "Did you eat enough, buggie?"
"Yeah, I'm just a bit tired now," she replied while rubbing her eyes.
"I know, let's get you home," Maya said softly.
Once they were home, Maya unlocked the door and Harley went straight up to her room to shower while Maya rinsed out her daughter's lunch box, poured her a glass of milk and put an Oreo next to the glass - the same thing she did every night- before pouring herself a small glass of wine.
Fifteen minutes later, Harley came downstairs with wet hair in her pyjamas and sat at the kitchen island on a stool to drink her milk and eat her cookie, "How was work, mommy?" Harley asked with a mouthful of cookie.
"Quiet, only the aid car got called out so I had a chance to catch up on paperwork. Did you finish your homework?" Maya asked while sipping on her wine.
"Yep and did some extra studying for my history test next week," Harley replied proudly.
"Well done. Ready to get into bed?" Maya asked as it was nearing 9pm and Harley liked to read before going to sleep.
"Yes, I just need to find my book out of my backpack."
"Okay, I'll be upstairs getting changed and showering," Maya said before disappearing up the stairs into her bedroom.
Thirty minutes later, Maya went into her daughter's bedroom in her pyjamas and lay down next to her in bed - as she does everyday- and waited for her to finish reading her chapter. Maya always lies in Harley's bed with her until she falls asleep because she's done it since she was tiny but also because when she's not with Harley she's by herself and even in the twelve years since Jack died she hasn't gotten used to feeling lonely. Harley lay down next to Maya and Maya ran her fingers through her daughter's blonde hair that was fanned out across the pillow. "Night Mommy," Harley said softly with her eyes closed.
"Goodnight Princess," Maya kissed the side of the younger blonde's head and then sat with her until she fell asleep.
..
Thursday
The next day, Maya was in the car with Harley to take her to track practice. Maya had never wanted Harley to do track because she knew how toxic it was for her with her father, but when Harley expressed an interest and a talent Maya decided she could go but if she ever said anything about quitting she would let her. Harley has done track since she was seven and never once said about quitting or even wanted to miss one practice so Maya had just accepted that her daughter had taken after her mom. "Have fun and I'll be here if you need me," Maya said before Harley got out the car. Maya always stayed in the car while Harley was at track just in case she was needed for anything."Bye Mom, love you," Harley said as she picked up her bag and got out of the car.
"Bye." Once Harley was out of the car, Maya looked down at her phone to see messages from Andy and Vic:
Group chat
Andy: Hey Girls! Free for drinks tomorrow night?
Vic: Should be but I'll have to check Luke is at home for Adelaide.
Andy: Okay xxMaya then typed in her reply
Maya: I'd love to if Harley would be able to be with Ads x
Vic: Luke said he'll be at home and he can have Harley as well :)
Maya: Perfect, what time?
Andy: 7pm at Joes?
Maya: Perfect, see you both there x
Vic: See you there!..
At 7 Harley came back to the car after track drinking water from her water bottle with her shoes in her other hand, "Hi Mom."
"Hi Baby, how was it?" Maya asked while her daughter got in the car.
"Good but I can't beat my eight hundred metre time," she replied while buckling her seat belt.
"That's not the end of the world, you still have the fastest time out of everyone, right?" Maya said as she began to pull out of the parking lot.
"I guess, hopefully I'll be able to do it next week," Harley said as she put her water bottle back in her bag.
"Maybe, but don't push yourself too hard or you'll get hurt."
"I know and I'll be careful, I promise."
"Are you okay to go to Aunty Vic's tomorrow night? If you are I'm going out with Aunt Andy and Aunty Vic," Maya always liked to check with Harley first because she was her priority.
"Definitely. Uncle Luke let's us make s'mores on the stove," she said excitedly.
"Okay, please be respectful in the Ripleys's house and try not to make mess," Maya said sternly.
"Yes Mom."
