Maya's pov
June 28th
Tuesday

At 3:30pm I was sitting in my office packing my stuff up ready for shift to end in fifteen minutes and then go get Harley from school. Suddenly, I heard quite a lot of commotion in the entryway outside my office so I opened the door and found the battalion chief at the front desk.
"Chief Frankel, is everything okay?" I asked the woman.

"Ah Captain Bishop, there you are. I am here for an inspection, I have been doing them at every station and 19 is the last one left. I just need to see how 19 is running on a day to day basis when you're not prepared for inspection," she explained with authority.

"I understand. Do you need me to direct you anywhere?" I asked, realising I was not going to be able to collect Harley from school.

"I should be okay to walk around by myself but then will have questions for you," she said.

"Okay, I will be in my office when you need me," I said politely.

Once I was back in my office I text Carina to see if she would be able to collect Harley:
Carina <3
Maya: Hey Baby, sorry if I'm ruining your day off but the Battalion Chief has just arrived for a surprise inspection so I can't pick Harley up from school. I was wondering if you would be able to pick her up and then take her to track? I promise I will be home before you get home from track and I'll make it up to you.
Carina: Of course I can, it's not a problem. Which schools is it and time is track?
Maya: You are a lifesaver! Seattle Grace High School and track is at 4:30 xx
Carina: No problem, I'll leave now x
Maya: thank you so much, I'll see you later.
Carina: See you later, Bambina x

Harley 👩‍👧
Maya: Hi Buggie, I'm stuck at work with the Battalion Chief  so Carina is going to pick you up from school and take you to track xx
Harley: Okay, I hope everything is alright at work and I'll see you later xoxo

Carina pov
I pulled up outside Harley's school just as she was coming out with a group of friends, each teenage girl had their backpack hanging off one shoulder and a lanyard around their necks. Harley was walking in the middle of a line of about five girls, her blonde hair blowing in the wind and ocean blue eyes sparkling the way Maya's do. When she notices me in the car she smiles, says something to her friends and then starts running until she's at the side of the car and swinging the door open. "Hey, how was school?" I asked as she settled into the passenger seat.

"Good, I got an A in my chemistry test and an A in my math test that I did last week," she said excitedly.

"Woah, well done," I said as I high fived her before pulling out of the school parking lot. "Mom says you have track at 4:30 and need to go home to change, is that correct?"

"Yep."

Twenty minutes later, she comes down the stairs in black running shorts, a purple shirt and has a blue and yellow backpack on her back. "Ready to go?" I ask her.

"I just need to fill up my water," she said and held up her pink water bottle that is decorated with stickers.

"Okay. Where are your shoes?" I ask, noticing her feet. She turns around to display her shoes tied to her bag,

"I just go with no shoes on," she laughed.

"Okay, as long as your mom is okay with that."

"She is, it's what I do every time. I have other shoes in my bag in case we need to go anywhere after," she explains, sounding very much like her mother.

"You sound like you've got it all under control," I said.

"More like my mom does, she's a little bossy," she laughed as she screwed the lid of her water bottle on and then followed me towards the door.

"What races do you run?" I asked her once we were on the way.

"The longest ones," she laughed, "Eight hundred metres, two thousand and ten thousand."

"Ah, like you're Mama," I recognised.

"Yeah, even though she never even wanted me to do track," she said, "But I happened to be good at it."

"You can't choose what you're good at," I said as we pulled up next to the track, "I hope you have fun. What does your mom usually do while you're here?" I asked, suddenly realising I'm very unrehearsed at this whole drop off and pick up thing.

"She usually sits in the car and waits but you don't have to. I finish at six so I guess it's up to you," she shrugged.

"I'll wait then, just in case you need me for anything."

"Okay thank you for bringing me, Carina," she said sweetly as she got out the car.

"Not a problem, bambina," I said before she closed the door and made her way down to the field, still not wearing any shoes.

..

An hour and a half later, Harley made her way up to the parking lot with a huge smile on her face, sneakers on and water bottle in hand. She got into the car and sat next to me with a light sheen of sweat on her face that was highlighted by her pink cheeks, "Good practice?" I asked her.

"So good. I beat my eight hundred metre time again and now I'm fastest in my age group and two ages above!" She said excitedly.

"Wow, looks like you'll be at the olympics in so time," I said with a big grin.

"Ha, no thank you. I want to be a paediatrician," she said before gulping her water out of her pink bottle.

"Wow, that's an amazing ambition," I said, feeling proud of her, "I think that beating your time deserves a treat," I said, beginning to drive out of the parking lot.

"Like what?"

"You'll see," I said with a smirk on my face.

Five minutes later, I stopped outside my favourite ice cream place, "Here, best ice cream in the whole of Seattle," I said excitedly.

"I've never been here before," she said.

"Well, there's a first time for everything," I said as we got out of the car and made our way towards the building, "Pick whichever flavour you want."

We came back out of the ice cream place, Harley with a cone of Oreo ice cream and myself with a tub of mango sorbet. "Thank you, Carina," she said gratefully.

"My pleasure," I replied.

When we got back to Maya's, Harley picked up her bag and ran into the house, leaving the door open for me. When I went into the kitchen I found Maya sitting at the kitchen island with papers scattered in front of her and Harley washing her hands in the sink. "Hi baby," I said as I rested my hands over her shoulders from behind and kissed her lips.

"Hi. You taste sweet," she told me with a confused look on her face.

"We had ice cream on the way home," Harley said joyfully while bouncing up and down slightly.

"Ah, you didn't have to do that," Maya said, running her hand up and down my arm.

"She had some big news," I said, looking to Harley to tell her mom.

"I beat my eight hundred metre time so now I'm faster than sixteen year old Julia and seventeen year old Annie!" Harley said, dancing around the kitchen.

"Wow! Buggie, that's amazing," Maya said while getting up, lifting Harley in her arms and spinning her round.
