"That's all you got?"
"Yes sir, I know it doesn't cover all of it, but I was hoping you could-"
"Wilbur, I can't keep doing this for you."
The brunett had expected that answer but it still hit its effect.
"Listen, I can get the money for this month, I just don't have it right now. I promise I can-"
"No." Wilbur cringed at the mans loud voice cutting his pleads out. "You know just as good as me that you're gonna come back with another excuse next time Wilbur. Either you give me the money now or I have to take away parts of your land, you know the rules."
"I- I understand that but I don't have that kind of money right now. Since the fee was introduced we've barely had any income, I'm sorry but-"
"Sorry doesn't cut it Wilbur. Get the money or rent less field parts."
There was no good way out of this. Less field parts would mean less potatoes to sell, meaning even less money. But there was nothing he could use to pay the missing rent. He had hoped the market would cover for this month but he had seriously underestimated their debt.
"Listen man, I don't have your money. Please just give me like a week or something. I can't risk losing the farm right now."
Suddenly Wil felt a hand wrap around the collar of his shirt as he was shoved against the wall behind him.
"I will say it one last FUCKING time. I want my money now. I'm not fucking around anymore Wil, either you have it or you come up with a way to pay me otherwise."
"Yes, yes I understand please just-"
Wilbur was trying to control his breathing as the man pressed his back further against the wall.
"There's two words I wanna hear out of that mouth of yours and it is either yes or no. Will you give me the money for this months rent or not?"
The brunett swallowed thickly before nodding.
"Yes, yes sir."
He wasn't thinking clearly. He didn't have the time or energy to think the answer through. He just wanted to get this man off of him. If that meant giving him money he couldn't spare, so be it.
"Now that wasn't so hard, was it?" The older grinned, finally letting go of Wilbur's shirt.
The man took a step away from him, giving Wil room to breatjdjfe.
"So, 700 in total."
Wilbur hesitated. The man was obviously overcharging him.
"That's not our usual-"
The older reached for a knife laying on his desk.
"700. Understood?"
Wilbur's eyes widened and he nodded quickly.
"Words."
"Yes, got it."
He mentally cursed at himself for letting his voice shake the way it did.
"Good, hand it over."
Wilbur rummaged around in his pockets and pulled out the missing money.
With a smug grin, the man grabbed the notes out of his hand and counted through it quickly. The brunett still hadn't moved away from the wall and just now dared to take a step into the room.
The old wooden floor was creaking under his steps as he made his way back outside.
What the fuck just happened
Wil had known the landlord could be a little grumpy sometimes but he'd never gotten physical before. After walking for a bit the realization hit him and questions started to flood his mind.
What was he going to tell Tommy? Soon enough they wouldn't even be able to afford proper food anymore. There wasn't many excuses he could use without telling his brother the truth.
Technoblade. That name had been waiting in the back of his mind all day. He had to talk to the prince again. Maybe there was a way he could help them?
The royals sure had enough money to pay off the landlord. Hell, they could buy his whole business if they wanted to and get him arrested if he complained.
But he had no idea what he would even say once he arrived at the castle. "Oh hello, I'm Wilbur, Techno's long lost twin brother, just passing through for some money." Yeah sure.
Wilbur blinked against the blinding evening sun and felt once again at a loss of solutions. He was so close to thinking they'd finally found some hope. It felt weird. The hot tears staining his cheaks, slowly running down his face, as he sat down on the side of the road.
He tried, he knew he tried but it had never been enough. So he sat there, crying. Having never felt this young and fragile yet forcibly mature at the same time.
Tommy didn't deserve this. He was the only one Wilbur had around him, he was the only reason he kept going. The need to protect the younger more than himself. But it felt like the world was against them yet again.
So he sat there. Waiting for this feeling to pass, waiting for the sun to dissappear on the horizon, waiting for himself to get up and get back to the farm.
Maybe he didn't deserve this either. The thought rarely crossed the brunetts mind. He'd accepted this life a long time ago. It was all he'd ever known. Being short on money at the end of every month, having to look out for his brother before himself. It had always been normal to him.
The world was unfair and he had to deal with it. Everyone did. Well not everyone, his new found twin didn't. Maybe he really did deserve better, or maybe he just wanted better, but really who could blame him.
The sun had tinted the sky in a beautiful combination of deep blues and purples. It was time for the young farmer to go home. Back to his brother, back to his worries.
And who knows maybe the future will turn out fine. Maybe there are miracles for people like him; and maybe, just maybe he already knew that miracle's name.
