The castle was quiet that day.
Not as quiet as usual, but silent. There was no one playing music, no sounds of maids and guards talking about their day, not even the animals in the gardens made any noise, just a lonely prince starring out of the great hall's windows.
The crown sitting heavier on his head than usual and the robe seemingly pulling him down more than it used to. It was a known ritual to the young royal. To be sat down staring out in the life that could've been his if it wasn't for his title.
The life and the people he could have if all those years ago Philza would've turned his back to him. If the young boy wouldn't have told the passing stranger he was looking for his family that was long gone.
Maybe he would've found them. Maybe he'd known them. Maybe he would've found a different one. And maybe, maybe he would've been able to look into those trusting brown eyes before.
Maybe. Techno never seemed to get that little word out of his head. The millions of possible outcomes of his life playing through his mind day by day, keeping him up at night wondering who and where he could've been by now.
But that's all they were. Possibilities. There was no way for him to escape the life as a royal or get time away from the palace alone. The day trip with Phil was something rare he gladly appreciated but that was the only time he'd get to see the real world outside of the castle walls for a while.
The comforting silence was disturbed by the king walking up to the lonely prince.
"Hello Techno."
Techno nodded shortly, giving him a questioning smile.
"What's been on your mind?"
Maybe it was fatherly instinct or maybe Techno was just easy to read but he never seemed to be able to hide anything from Phil. Whatever it was he wasn't telling the older, it wouldn't take him long to get to it.
"I met someone on the market."
Philza raised an eyebrow. His son had never expressed certain interest in the town's people.
"And who might that be?"
Since the moment Phil had taken his first step through that door, Techno had been arguing with himself if it was a good idea to tell him about the brunett.
"No one of certain interest. An old friend I'd say."
Philza didn't seem to be satisfied with that answer.
"Old friend? I don't remember you ever talking about people you know outside the castle."
Techno scoffed.
"Not that there are many to talk about. But yes, we were friends long before I even lived here."
Phil nodded.
"I never asked about your life before I took you in."
The silence that sentence created laid heavy in the room. Techno had always considered Phil family. There really was no reason for him to keep his early life a secret. But it had always felt wrong to tell anyone.
Like he should be ashamed of who he used to be and the decisions he'd made in the past.
"There's not a lot to talk about, honestly. It's been a long time."
Techno was still staring outside the windows so he couldn't see Phil's reaction to his answer.
"But it doesn't really matter anyway. This is my life now, you're my family Phil. My past is something neither of us should have to worry about."
This time he was looking into the kings eyes. Techno had never been that good at reading people, but Phil was different. His eyes were like an open book to him, mirroring every emotion on the older's mind.
Sympathy mixed with confusion shadowed through them for a second, before the king's expression cleared.
"I understand that." He smiled warmly. "On another note, you know we have that meeting with Prince Karl today?"
Techno groaned. He didn't necessarily dislike the rulers of their neighbouring kingdoms, it was the formal meetings and hour long discussions about war fare and trading that bothered him.
"Yes, I know. Is he coming alone?"
"I believe so. But you never know with him."
"Touché, just a casual meeting or are we having issues again?"
"He didn't specify anything so I'd assume it's just the usual, but you know how these meetings can go."
Techno nodded thoughtfully. He had seen this go down many times before. Other rulers entering their castle, saying they just wanted to discuss trading routes and ending up almost going to war.
It was usually a bad sign when the guest didn't specify the reason for their meeting but Karl was a different story. Phil's and his kingdom had been allies for eons by now. It was to be expected for this was just a visit of old friends but a healthy dose of caution never killed anyone.
"Alright, thank you. Do you know when he'll arrive?"
"Should be any time now, assuming they didn't run into any trouble." Phil turned back towards the door again. "I'll go get ready, I'd advice you do the same."
Techno heard his foot steps become fainter as he walked out into the hallway. He sighed and let his shoulders hang a little lower under the weight of the heavy robe. The pinkett slumbed back into the wooden chair behind him.
Pinching the bridge of his nose the brunett man crossed his mind again.
I need to talk to him soon
Wilbur was still surrounded by question marks in his mind. But as much as he wanted the answers to those questions, he had more important duties at the moment.
With that the young royal got up and walked out into the hallway back towards his room.
