Bucky
When Steve tells me he's leaving, I punched him square in the jaw. And not with my hand of flesh. With the vibraniun machine.
"Dammit Bucky! What was that for?" Steve yells angrily. I hesitate for a second. I'm not actually sure why I punched him. He explained that he's leaving with Natasha and that he's giving up being Captain America and truth be told, Im okay with all that. So why did I punch him?
"Sorry, it's a reflex," I finally mumble. Steve still looks angry, but he rubs his jaw, which I assume is bruised pretty bad, and keeps talking.
"So... since I won't be Captain America anymore, I'm handing the shield off." I would assume my face is incredulous at the moment. I don't want the shield. There's gotta be a million people other than me that are way more qualified to have that title.
Steve must notice my alarmed face, because he laughs and says, "Don't worry, Buck, I'm not giving it to you. I knew you wouldn't want that. Frankly, the person I did give it to wasn't sure if they should have it. But, I know that they're the right person for it."
I frown. "Steve, please tell me you did not give it to Rhodes."
"No Bucky I didn't give it to him."
"WELL THEN WHO DID YOU GIVE IT TO!"
"Jeez, calm down man. I gave it to Sam," Steve finishes simply.
I blink. Sam Wilson. I remember, vaguely, that he was a special ops agent before he became an Avenger. So he's obviously American. Not that I was super worried about that. He'd always been on Steve's side and he managed to work with me well enough. Well, work with me without strangling me. I've been told I'm and aggravating person to work with. Anyway, Sam was a good choice. But wait...
"Steve, he's black. Won't that be controversial among people?"
Steve sighs and looks away.
"Yeah. You know, he said the exact same thing. He doesn't think people will except him as Captain America. It makes me sad that he thinks like that."
It made me sad too. Sam is just of deserving of the shield as Steve, even if his skin color is darker.
Steve continues, "But I know that he's strong enough to overcome all the judgement. Besides, I know you'll help him."
I subconsciously nod my head. "Yeah... I will."
"Good," Steve says, "I'll miss you Buck."
I look up at him. He smiles at me.
"When are you leaving?"
"We're planning on leaving tomorrow morning. Don't worry, this isn't the final goodbye. I just needed to tell you what's going on." I nod again. I can't believe how much I'm just accepting that he's leaving with Nat. Especially since I freaked out not two weeks ago when I thought he was leaving us for Peggy. I think Steve belongs with Nat. They understand each other and balance each other out. They'll take good care of one another.
"Will you ever come back?"
"Maybe," Steve answers, "Maybe not. It depends on what I find in Russia."
"Well whatever you do, don't get yourself caught in any life threatening situations. Nat's gonna need you."
"Yes sir," Steve jokes. We both laugh and then look out over the Avengers campus. I can feel the shift in dynamic between us happening. I can feel myself moving on from this part of my life. Falling from the train, being Steve's right hand man, being the Winter Solider. That's all over now.
The future is calling
...
Bright and early the next morning, Bruce, Clint and family, Steve, Natasha, Sam and I are all standing in the airport ready to send Steve and Natasha off to Russia. Clint and Nat were standing off the the side, having some kind of moment, Bruce and Steve, Sam were all talking and I am just kind of listening to their conversation.
"This kind of feels like we're sending you off on your honeymoon," Sam jokes. Bruce and I laugh. Steve just goes red.
"Stop saying that! Me and Nat are just going on a mission together! Not anything we haven't done before."
"Yeah, don't tell Nat the honeymoon joke, she'll probably judo flip you or something," Bruce laughs.
Me and Sam laugh, but Steve just blushes even harder. Finally, Clint and Natasha finally rejoin that group and the real goodbyes begin. Nat and Sam hug and she smiles at something he said. Knowing him it was probably a dumb joke. I always laugh at them, even if they aren't actually funny.
While Bruce and Nat are saying goodbye, Steve comes over to me and Sam.
"Okay guys, this is it."
Sam nods, "Yep, this is it." He looks sad and nervous and...scared. That is an unusual look for him.
"Sam, it'll be okay," Steve says, "You've got your whip smart brain and this walking android over here to help you." I assume by the android he means me. I am slightly offended, but it makes Sam laugh so thats good. Steve and Sam hug and then Sam nods at me and backs away so me and Steve can say goodbye.
"This might be the end of the line, Buck," Steve says with a sad smile. I return it.
"Well, even if it is, I have a new line to jump on." I glance over at Sam, who is again joking with Clint and Natasha. Clint says something funny which makes both Nat and Sam crack up. Once his laughing fit is over, he raises his head and meets my eyes. I quickly glance away, embarrassed that I was caught staring at him.
Steve smiles, seeing me looking at Sam. "That's the spirit Buck. That's the spirit."
We hug one last time, and then Steve and Natasha pick up their bags, and walk toward security. Sam comes to stand behind me and puts his hand on my shoulder, reassuring me. As I watch Steve disappear around the corner, I am sad. But, feeling the weight of Sams hand on my shoulder makes it all better.
