The next morning, I started packing to leave. I'm not exactly sure where I planned on going, but I was leaving before my parents got home.

Eli tries his best to make breakfast. Mostly for me. From my stand in my room, it smells like something is burning.

"Eli?" I yell from my room to the kitchen.

"Yeah princess?" He coughs a little after he speaks, probably due to smoke inhalation. The nickname gives me the feeling of butterflies in my rib cage.

"Do you have clothes? I can give you my brothers- but they might be a bit big." I walk into the kitchen holding my brothers old flannel.

He passed away a long time ago. When I was six. I was old enough to understand it, and still too young for it to hurt too much. Now that I look back, it stings. A lot more than it used to.

Eli plates the food and sets it on the table, it looks fine on top, but it's black, burnt underside is showing. It looks like an omelette of sorts, but I don't have any eggs in the house.

"I would not eat that if I were you. I-" He sighs "-am a terrible cook. Anyway, that should be fine. I didn't know you had a brother." He pokes the food with a fork. I almost expect it to poke him back.

"I don't anymore. Mom refuses to move his things." My grasp on the flannel tightens before I hand it to him.

He slides it on his arms and pulls it around him. "It fits pretty good actually. Are you ready to go otherwise?" I glance back to my tightly filled bag. Most of its clothing. Another, smaller bag sits on the floor beside it, full of canned foods and a single pot. We can make due otherwise.

I sigh. "For the most part. I've got food, water, and clothes. I figured we'd find somewhere to stay before we ran out of materials. How about you?" I ask the question carefully. I'm about to run away with a boy, who's life is threatened by my own parents, so we can be at peace.

"I think we're good." I look at him and smile.

"Let's go then."

The roads are strangely empty. Just a few cars here and there. We've got a hotel room booked for the night. It's pretty cheap, probably has rats to be honest.

There's this aura that surrounds these types of trips. Night time ones, I mean. Just you and your partner in crime, alone, on a wide open road that stretches all the way through the United States.

Then, we have the rush, the adrenaline, the fever dream of being a runaway. My parents return home in 43 hours. Let's just hope we're long gone by then.

I notice a bright neon "VACANCY" sign off to the right. We pull into the old run down Motel6 and grab our bags.

"Let's go check in, alright?" Eli closes the car door and locks it.
