[ NO ONE'S POV ]
The dark room was silent, with an occasional flicker of a lightning bug. The soft glow lighting the room seemed unusually dim, maybe even stagnant, reflecting the tension between you and Sans. Lots of thoughts and feelings were coursing through each of you. Unknown to you, Sans was mostly feeling betrayed, with a hint of jealousy. If anything, the most you were feeling was nervousness. Confrontation wasn't usually your strong suit.
Having not prepared anything to say to him, you took a moment to arrange your thoughts. Obviously, your main motive was to apologize and explain everything that happened, but you also had an impulse to ask why Sans was so bothered. Unconsciously, while you thought, your back had slightly leaned into Sans' and he stiffened at this touch. This flinch pulled you from your thoughts and you became extremely self-aware again.
". . . So, ya just gonna sit there? Heh, I'm getting kinda board," Sans lightly said with his usual chuckle. Although, this pun sounded a lot more sad, more in-genuine, than they normally would. This didn't surprise you much; he had the right to be upset. If anything, his attempt at a joke right now made you feel even more guilty for making him uncomfortable.
"O-Oh, uhm, no. . I was going to- uh- explain everything. . . if that's okay. ." you mumbled out, pulling your hands back towards your lap to fiddle with them. "Mhm, yeah, whatever. Lemme see how you'll handle this," Sans laughed out passive aggressively. You were tempted to comment about his dismissive tone but decided it wasn't worth it. Snapping back at him wouldn't help anyone right now, especially you if you were trying to apologize.
"S-So, first of all, I just wanted to say that everything I've said to you up until now has been genuine- I never meant to hide anything from you, really. I'm genuinely sorry, Sans. The whole date thing with Papyrus was just a misunderstanding- I don't actually like him or anything, I was just trying to distract him in battle. I-I guess it worked a bit too well, huh. . ?" you nervously explained, having to take hurried breaths between each sentence. A small "mHm" was all you got from Sans, so you took that as a sign to continue.
"Papyrus and I talked it over before I went searching for you and we were both very clear with each other that we'd rather be friends. O-Oh, speaking of searching for you- I'm sorry I took so long to find you. I was under the impression you'd gone to Waterfall so I searched a bit there before realizing you'd probably come here. ." You we're very tempted to turn around and apologize again, face to face, but his cold voice interrupted these thoughts. "Why come looking for me, though?" Sans asked, genuine confusion and coldness lacing his voice.
"Isn't that kinda. . . obvious?" you queried, tilting your head down in embarrassment even though Sans couldn't see your face. Silence filled the small room again and echoed down the long corridor. The only sound that was heard was your quiet breathing and the occasional small squeak of a mushroom if a firefly happened to land on it.
The endless void of sound was filled when you heard a small rattling of bones and a sharp breath.
"Why?"
The question itself was simple enough, but what Sans was trying to reason aloud confused you. He never specifically asked what his "why" was directed towards, whether it be your feelings or possibly something more personal to himself. Either way, the obvious crack in his voice made it apparent he was probably crying now.
"Sans,-" you tried to start but were almost immediately cut off. "No," Sans simply said, his words stronger this time. You slightly shrunk into the ground and his back, upset by his tone and the general direction of where this conversation was going.
