I unlocked the door, "Before you walk in, there's only one bed."
"Couch it is, for you though. I get the bed."
It's bizarre how normal I felt regardless of what he did.
**
The room was humid, smelled like mold, and I'm pretty sure I saw a roach scatter when I turned on the light.
Vinnie muttered something to himself and chuckled.
I looked at him confused, "What's funny?"
"This. This situation. I imagine they already discovered his patrol car empty. And now, we're here, in Morrys Inn, running away. It's pretty funny if you think long enough."
I sighed and sat on the ripped futon, "It's outrageous is what it is. I.. how are you so calm?"
He flipped on the tv and sat on the bed, "Honestly, I don't know. What I did wasn't something, I hadn't thought of before. I know I sound crazy but I don't know. He was a bad guy. You just gotta believe me on that one." He jumped off the bed, "I'm gonna shower, can you stop by a WalMart or something to get me clothes?"
"Yeah."
I turned on my phone to look for the nearest store, my phone began to flood with messages.
Kendra- Have u seen the news? Where the hell are you?
Mom-26 missed calls
I gasped and turn my phone off again.
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS GIRL?
"Aurora Strued school valedictorian, missing. She is 17, 5'4, light brown wavy hair. Miss Strued is the second teenager gone missing in such a short span of time."
There I was, on the tv. Shit just hit the fan. I banged on the bathroom door, "Vin you gotta come see this."
"Hold on, shampoo in my eye."
"No it's serious, our pictures are on tv."
The water stopped running, and Vinnie peered out the door, "I uh need a towel."
I shoved a towel through the door crack and he came scrambling out.
BREAKING NEWS
"Jeffery Romano, beloved community member and chief of police, now missing. Blood was found at the crime scene. There are no suspects at this time. Responders say that the criminal was smart and took a long time researching crime scene clean up, from the looks of the scene. Could this be a possible serial killer on our hands?"
I gulped, "Hey do you think police could track my phone if I turned it on for a few seconds?"
Vinnie grabbed my shoulders, "What did you do?"
"I needed the GPS, I wasn't thinking." I began to ramble.
"Stop talking let me think."
We sat in silence until he broke it, "Alright, we gotta ditch my car. I'm an idiot. There are gonna be cops searching for it everywhere."
"And then do what Vin? Walk to Mexico?"
"Nah.. nah. I'll hot wire one in the parking lot. This place got cameras?"
"I don't know, I'll go check out and I'll give you a signal if they do."
**
Here we are again, back to Office Lady.
"Hi, I'd like to check out." I scanned the office for cameras. None, except right smack dab in the middle of the office. I gave Vinnie the signal.
"Why? You aren't getting your money back."
I sighed, "Right," I looked at her name tag, "Marianne is it? I don't need the money. I'm checking out. You have a great night." I began to leave.
"Hey, Valerie. Your names not Valerie at all. Your the girl on the tv."
I felt sweat beads form on my back, "You can pocket all the money, and let's say I wasn't here. Yeah?"
She shuffled towards me and pointed, "You best not be a murderer kid. You weren't here. Valerie was. She looked nothin like you."
I raised my eyebrow, "One more favor, the BMW in the parking lot, wear gloves and hide it or junk it or sell it. I don't care, it's just gotta be gone in a max of two hours. Hide the plate too." I slid the keys across the desk.
She shook her head and sighed, "Alright, I'll have it gone in one."
Marianne was a life saver. It makes me think how many fugitives she actually let go.
She gave a sweet smile, Vinnie honked, "Be safe. I'll delete the tapes. Goodnight, Valerie."
**
"Where to?"
Vinnie looked down, "Well, I need you to get me clothes. Then, I'm not sure. Mexico? Bahamas?"
"I need my clothes and stuff Vin."
"Great so do I. First spot, back home."
I almost vomited. Am I really about to throw my life away for a guy, who doesn't even love me?
"The cops will be everywhere."
"We'll stake out. When it's the right time, you run in, I run in. We get five minutes. Hell write a note if you want. But say it's anonymous."
The sun was rising. It was beautiful. It almost made me forget that I was running away with a murderer. Murder is wrong but, there are some exceptions.
"Okay. So we get our shit but what about money and hello the fact that we are missing? People are going to recognize us."
"We'll drive to Mexico. Then just hope we don't get caught?"
"That's a horrible idea. Maybe there's a place to cross where there's no patrol."
Vinnie smacked the dash, "That's not something this thing can go through."
"Alright whatever. Money?"
"Well I have cash saved up. I guarantee you do too. We can find jobs in Mexico."
"Okay... well what about.."
He cut me off, "Shh, I love this song."
Vinnie turned up the stereo, smiled and glanced at me.
It was "Runaway ( U & I)" by Galantis.
"I wanna run away
I wanna run away
Anywhere out this place
I wanna run away
Just you and I, I, I, I, I
You and I, I, I, I, I
You and I, I, I, I, I
You and I, I, I, I, I
Just you and I"
