As soon as Becca returned home, she went to the bathroom and washed her face, towel dried it, then looked up at the mirror. She didn't want to believe it was them, but they never made social calls. They never went out for a cup of coffee just for the heck of it. Even if they did, they didn't wear those ninja outfits which is what they were, minus the ski mask. They were armed that was for sure, but whatever mission they were doing, it hadn't happened yet. There was the possibility that they had just finished the mission and were on their way home, but then it would be on the news. Their missions were anything but small. No, she thought to herself, chances were that they were here on a mission already. Going to do something big and they were doing recon work, or setting up their mission. Seeing Jennifer again after almost a year wasn't a coincidence. A coincidence maybe that they saw each other at the coffee shop. That was a coincidence, but her being in Tober? Not a social call. Becca went to her room, bit her lip, and turned on her laptop. She had to figure out just what the hell they were up to. It would be easy just log in to her old account, the only problem is, if she did that, they would be tracking her and everything she was looking up. That would be in opposition to their plans and they would find her. It wasn't so much she was worried about being killed, but being brought back there and having to live that life. Okay, and yes, she didn't want to be killed either, especially losing the people she cared about. Like Ethan. Most likely they had seen the news and then they would put two and two together. Too much. She needed the anonymity, and having them know where she was would close the anonymity quickly. Hack into their site maybe? Again, no, they would find someone hacking their site and then they would track the person and that would lead to Veronica's house and if Veronica was home and she wasn't? Veronica would mention her roommate Becca, and that would set off bells. They would know it was her and that would be the end of it.
Tober was a small town though. It wasn't big like New York or Dallas. This was a quiet town which didn't get a lot of international action, until Becca donned her costume. There was probably something about her in The New York Post or some big paper. Maybe a small article but people read those. Tober didn't make sense. She could maybe understand Mavory because that was closer to the compound and maybe the compound wanted control over the city, that would make more sense and it was more feasible due to the proximity but she couldn't understand why Tober. There was nothing happening, except the decay in Harbor Street, but that had already been happening. Were they maybe trying to stop her? She shook her head. They wouldn't have one big mission just to stop her. It would be too much exposure. Like the CIA coming in to take out one of their own rogue operatives and then having to admit that that person used to belong to the CIA, and having the CIA to admit they are the CIA. That's how the Soldiers of Darkness were.
Becca sighed and thought again, tapping the keys on her computer. Nothing out of the ordinary except for her. All she could think of was Harbor Street. Maybe because she had lessened crime and made the lieutenant aware of the situation causing more patrolling, maybe they came to stop that? But no, it would take at least a year to get Harbor completely safe and a well-to-do street. That was the minimum, it would take longer than that. The Soldiers of Darkness didn't take something half built and bring it to the ground again. They were about complete destruction. They wanted to take something high up, most likely a rich street and bring to the level of Harbor Street, that was the way they thought. They wouldn't concern themselves with a street though. Their missions had a lot of manpower and having all that manpower for just one street? That didn't make sense. Unless. She cupped her chin. Unless they wanted to degrade all of Tober. Cause destruction to the whole city? That didn't make any sense and yet it did. Mavory was a better choice strategically. She did an internet search for Mavory. Nothing. Nothing out of the ordinary, and Marjorie would have called her if something like that happened.
