I don't remember my dad he left when I was five all I know about him is the stories that Andy used to tell me " all he cares about is money" he always said. He moved to Sunnyvale which is only 30 minutes away he never visited, never called, never wrote. " No, after all these years of no contact now he wants to get to know me"
" I used to be mad too but he's your father".
" No, I don't have a father he lost that privilege a long time ago. He officially lost it when he didn't show up to your own son's funeral. Now you want to send me away!" both of them were silent not knowing what to say. " I'm going through the toughest time in my life you didn't see what I saw. I'm depressed and angry oh, so very angry that he'll leave me here all alone" she grabbed my hand. " You're not alone I'm here, Greg's here. I think it'll be good for you to have a little break from here, get a change of scenery. It's just for the summer" I looked at her eyes and ripped my hand out of hers. " David can go to hell and so, can you" I slammed my bedroom door.
I screamed into my pillow before putting out all my rage on it till I got tired and out of breath. I put on a record music playing in the background. I pulled the bin from under the bed inside was some of Andy's belongings inside was a couple of pictures and his favorite corduroy bomber jacket. I put it to my nose it smells like him putting it on. It was big on me the sleeves covered my hands laying down in bed when I heard a crumpling sounds in the pocket was a small envelope it had my name on it. Why is their a envelope with my name on it in Andy's jacket pocket I opened the envelope inside was a small slip of paper ' To, baby sis I was at the mall when I saw this necklace I didn't know why I was so drawn to it but it was calling me. The jeweler said I should give it to someone special . I knew I had to get it for you I never told you this but you're a special person in my life if not the most important person in my life. Love your big brother Andy' tears ran down my cheeks. Inside was a gold oval beaded necklace opening it to see a small picture of Andy and I " thank you Andy" clasping it around my neck.
" You should put some makeup on, you look tired" mom said. I poured myself a cup of coffee " I am tired. . . tired of your bullshit" the coffee was bitter. " You don't like coffee" ignoring my comment. " You try to survive on two hours sleep" Greg sat across from me. " After breakfast go pack we'll be leaving soon" I pushed my plate away. " I lost my appetite ".
I change into a orange t-shirt and jean shorts filling up my suitcase where I couldn't even zip it up letting out a frustrated grunt " need help?" I sat on the suitcase while Greg zipped it up. " Dude, what do you have in here, bricks?" struggling to move it to the door. " 2 months worth of clothes and necessities " sitting at my vanity staring into the mirror. I did look like shit Greg grabbed my hair brush starting to brush my hair I started to feel more relaxed " how about I curl your hair, your hair looks so pretty when it's curled"
" Should I trust you with a hot tool?".
" I'm good at it, I do my mom's hair every time she goes dancing". I agreed.
" Why does my mom want to get rid of me?".
" She just wants whats best for you".
" Sending me off with a complete stranger sounds very therapeutic for me".
" You were always curious about your dad now you have a chance to get to know him. Who knows you might like living in Sunnyvale " i scoffed.
" Sunnyvale is full of preppy asshole wannabes " Greg push my hair forward.
I was starting to feel more like myself putting on a little bit of makeup " I've never seen this" Greg said grabbing the necklace. " I found it last night it was in his jacket pocket. He never got the chance to give it to me" opening the locket making Greg smile. " Now he's always with you" mom knocked on the wall. " Ready to go?" I nodded my head.
We drove though town passing the 'leaving Shadyside' sign then the whole atmosphere changed where we had dead grass and dirt they had bright green grass and flowers. We had ghetto houses and they have big mansions the sky is always bright blue in Sunnyvale. We pulled up to a big brown house " shit, Regan you get to live here" we got my stuff out of the car. When a man I'm guessing my father approaching us " how was the drive?" he had dirty blonde hair and green eyes like me. While Andy and mom had brown hair and brown eyes " fine, you remember Regan and this is Andy's best friend Greg" he shook Greg's hand while I just stared at him with a blank face. " Regan you look just like your nana when she was your age".
" I don't know if I should take that as an insult or a compliment" he looked very tense. " It's definitely a compliment your nana was a very beautiful woman. Come inside, let me get this" I grabbed my suitcase out of his hand. " I got it" we followed him inside. The place very extravagant " nice place, David" mom said. " Thanks, let me show you your room Regan" we went up the stairs everything looks so expensive. " We'll figure out the decor later on but this will do for right now" the room was plain one big dresser, one nightstand, and a full sized bed. " Greg, help Regan get settled and we're gonna talk".
" You want anything to drink?".
" No, sit" he obeyed.
" Regan is going through a rough time right now and being in a new environment might be tough for her just be easy on her".
We'll be just fine".
" She's been having nightmares sometimes she sleeps through the night most of the time she doesn't".
" I know how to take care of a kid".
" She's not just a kid she's seen what no girl should have seen. You wouldn't know you left all you know is how to take care of yourself. Why now do you want to be in her life, David?".
" She needs her dad's support".
" She needed that support at Andrew's funeral" grabbing my purse.
" Why, are you letting her stay with me then?"
" Cause she deserves to know her father, kids!".
Greg and I went down the long staircase " let this be a learning and healing experience , okay. Give him a chance" I let out a long sigh. " I'll try" walking back to the station wagon. My mom pulled me into a hug my arms stayed glue to my side" I love you, call me anytime day or night" I just gave her a mad glare. " I'm gonna miss you. Thank you for being here for me don't know what I would have done without you" hugging Greg tightly. " Always, you know my number right?" I nodded my head. " I'll call you tomorrow" we said our goodbyes. I waved as I watched them drive away.
