I wake up to the sweet smell of pancakes with Queen faintly playing in the background " Andy" I ran downstairs to see David cooking " morning" David said happily. I honestly thought it was Andy queen was his favorite band and I wake up to it almost every Saturday morning " what's a matter" I scratch the record stopping the music. " I thought you were Andy. Queen was his favorite band" I murmured. " Oh, Regan I'm so sorry. I didn't know" happy memories of him and I dancing in the living room to this band played in my head. " Of course you didn't know. You weren't there" opening up my locket looking down at the picture of us. " Why did you leave? you had a wife and two kids".
" I was in a bad place back then. I was at work all the time by the time I got home you guys would be in bed. Your mom and I didn't see eye to eye anymore. You were too young to remember all of this" all I knew of him was the stories that Andy used to tell me. " Nothing much really has changed in the past decade has it. You know nobody knew you had a daughter let alone a son" I'll like to say that I didn't care but it hurt. It hurt really bad. " I see you met Joyce. I'll talk to her husband he's a good man".
" No, this is your problem not mine. If it makes you feel any better I told everyone that you were dead!".
I grabbed Andy's jacket pulling it to my chest laying on the bed. I cried till the tears stopped falling just laying there numb " your mom called. She wants to talk to you" David said softly. " I don't want to talk to her" she doesn't deserve it. " come eat" I put Andy's jacket on. " I reheated them" putting a plate of pancakes in front of me. " Got any syrup?" he handed it to me when the phone rang. " Hello, yeah she's here. Hold on".
" Regan it's Greg" handing me the phone.
" I've been trying to call you".
" I know I've been busy got a job been taking up most of my time".
" A job, where?".
" At the grocery store".
" What are you in charge of the bread slicer".
" A bag boy for right now. It pays alright. How's it going over there in Sunnyvale?" I gave David a look knowing that I wanted some privacy he left.
" It's not so bad. I guess".
" You and your dad getting alone, fine?".
" He's not home much during the day and when he's home we don't really talk much. I made a friend she makes it here less shitty".
" Wow, your friends with a Sunnyvaler. I thought you said that they are all preppy assholes".
" Sheila's pretty cool but her mother is a perfect definition of a sunnyvaler. Her dad seems nice".
" You still having nightmares?".
" Not as frequently went 3 days without one".
" That's progress, that's great Regan seems to me you're improving over there".
" I thought I was till this morning David was blasting Queen" his side of the line was silent.
" I ran downstairs so fast. I thought it was Andy".
" The other day I saw a guy that looked exactly like him from behind. I ran up to him realizing it was just some random dude. We have our good and bad days just keep thinking of the good ones with the happy memories like when he got stuck in the baby swing at the park" I burst out laughing.
" The firefighters had to get him out took them two hours. Don't just stand there help me" I mimicked.
We laughed remembering that day " I miss him so much".
