"'Men of science have made abundant mistakes of every kind,'" the scientist told Nancy and Jonathan as they followed closely behind him through the laboratory's halls. I gave a bit of distance, my head still reeling from my private conversation with him before. "George Sarton said that. You guys know who George Sarton is?" Nancy shook her head, straight-faced, and the man shrugged. "Doesn't really matter. The point is, mistakes have been made, yes."

"Mistakes?" Nancy repeated angrily. A soldier and I locked eyes as we passed each other, and he nudged a companion and gestured in my direction. I quickly returned my attention to the three people in front of me, wanting nothing more than to leave the godforsaken place.

"Yes."

"You killed Barbara," Nancy told the scientist, but he didn't look guilty in the slightest.

"Abundant mistakes," he merely said, "but, the men involved with those mistakes, the ones responsible for what happened to your brother ... and Miss Holland's death... they're gone." As our group rounded the corner, a room with glass windows showed to our left. Inside were scientists working under yellow-tinted light, syringes in their gloved hands. They dripped an unknown substance on something they held, but our pace kept me from truly seeing what it was. "They're gone, and for better for worse, I'm the schmuck they brought in to make things better... but I can't make things better without your help."

"You mean without us shutting up?" Nancy said smartly, and I took a few rushed steps to get closer. The scientist chuckled, looking over his shoulder at Jonathan with a smirk.

"She's tough, this one. You guys been together long?"

"You're saying you need more from us?" I spoke up before my friend could retort, the first time since I had reunited with Nancy and Jonathan. "Our... our conversation wasn't enough?" The man didn't answer, and Nancy glanced back at me with a sigh. It was clear she hadn't expected her day to go like this. The scientist lifted his hand and motioned forward with his fingers as we rounded a corner.

"Wanna see what really killed your friend?" His casualty made my eyes narrow. A solid metal door was opened by a soldier on the other side, and we followed the man into the dark room. "Teddy, I brought you an audience today," he addressed another scientist standing behind a circular control table that took up the first half of the room. "I hope you boys don't mind."

"The more the merrier, sir," another scientist piped up, focused on dressing another man into a grey protective hazmat suit. I stopped as the group did, and my jaw dropped slowly as I peered through the window in front of us.

"I'd call it one hell of a mistake," the scientist named Owens sighed, and I felt a whimper escape from the back of my throat. "Wouldn't you?" On the other side of the thick glass was a wall of something that looked like pitch-black vines. I could feel the cold it was radiating despite the protection between us. Tendrils of what looked to be massive groups of dust floated in the air. The vine wall seemed to pulsate, and tiny cracks in it showed something bright red and orange glowing behind it.
