"Can we get some coffee now?" I say once we're past customs.
"Yes please," says Niall. "Maybe you'll be less cranky with me when we get some coffee into you." We both laugh and walk towards the coffee corner.
"A vanilla soy latte for me please," I order. I stare at Niall and wait for him to make his choice. He stares at the board with squinted eyes.
"A double espresso for me, please."
"I don't get how you can drink a coffee that strong."
"You're the one who destroys the flavour with your milk and vanilla." We both laugh while we walk a bit further and wait for our coffees there. Luckily it doesn't take long before ours are ready. It takes everything in me to not snatch the cup from the barista's hands. When I finally take the first sip, I close my eyes. My whole body relaxes instantly.
"Good?" I smile at Niall.
"Amazing," I say. With my small suitcase in one hand and my coffee in the other Niall and I walk towards our gate. We still have a bit of time before we will be boarding the plane, so we take a seat and enjoy our coffees.
"Did you brush up on your Spanish?"
"Uh, si," I reply while I raise my shoulders. "You?"
"Nein," he replies. "Oh no, wait, that's German. So I guess that's a no." I laugh and shake my head. From my backpack, I take out a small book. 'Spanish for dummies' it reads on the cover. "Did you seriously buy one of those dummy books?"
"No, I already had it."
"From when you were actively learning Spanish," Niall says and rolls his eyes.
"Mock me all you want, but at least I will be able to communicate in the native language."
"I'm sure they will speak English there too."
"And what if we want to get coffee at a tiny local place. Do you expect the old lady to do it all in English?"
"Well, no, maybe not. I'm sure it will be fine." Niall leans back and closes his eyes. I take another sip of my coffee and dive into the book. I am familiar with the basics already, but it is good to brush up on it. Obviously, I want to be able to speak at least a bit of Spanish when I get there.
"Passengers for the flight to Mallorca can now board at Gate 31." It chimes through the speakers a while later. I poke Niall in his side and get my things ready. One by one we are allowed into the plane. I can't help but touch the outside of it before I enter and find my seat. Niall follows close behind me and helps with my suitcase when I can't get it into the overhead compartment right away.
"Can I sit by the window?"
"If that's what's on your ticket," Niall says with a smile. I crawl over the seats and take mine next to the window. Niall scoots in next to me. Here we are. Just a little while longer and we will actually be on holiday.
"Niall." I turn to face him and look him in the eyes.
"Yeah?" He stares right back into mine and for a second neither of us moves or says anything.
"I am so excited," I say.
"Mallorca here we come."
The plane finally taxies its way to the take-off strip and I can't wait. The feeling when the plane floats always amazes me. It brings butterflies to my stomach. The kind that I get in roller coasters, it's a feeling I quite enjoy. I look out of the window and see how the world starts to pass me by faster and faster and then the feeling is there. The plane takes off and we are floating. I can't contain myself and a wide smile crosses my face. Next to me, Niall is watching a movie and I shake my head. I take out my book again and continue reading. There are two more hours for me to cram some more Spanish into my head and I am determined to do just that.
