two weeks and a half earlier
Maya was fidgeting and shaking like her whole life depended on that exact instant.
She was trying to picture all the possible scenarios, her mind like a biographical multiplex.
She spent the night before dreaming about what the next day would have been like and she had multiple options running through her head.
In the most likely one the collection of the eggs would go smoothly and all the eggs would be healthy so that they could start fertilization.
Carina would be staying by her wife's side even though Maya knew that they still had plenty of things to discuss about themselves.
Then there was the one in which the eggs weren't healthy because of the very long run that ended with a fall of two days prior.
But Carina would be staying.
Then the one where the eggs were healthy but Carina had left her making all the decisions with them. And Maya wasn't absolutely ready for that option.
Worst case scenario: the eggs were damaged and Carina wasn't with her.
And Maya knew that she was so not ready for it.
three weeks earlier
Carina emerged from the bathroom almost half and hour later. She tried to muffle her puffy eyes with some make up, so that Maya couldn't see that she had been crying for the past three hours.
Coming back to the livingroom she saw her wife sitting on the couch with an antiseptic and some cotton to clean her cut and bruised hands.
She pictured her wife running away from the apartment and falling in the rain, and she felt her eyes going wet again.
The brunette walked closer to sit on the couch next to her and took the cotton from her hands to help Maya.
The blonde raised her head to look at her wife and the italian saw such a mortified look in her blue ocean's eyes that she didn't control her body when it went forward to hug the firefighter tight.
And Maya strated to sob so hard that her bones were aching and Carina was shaking while tears were streaming down her face too.
"It's ok bambina. Everything's fine. Va tutto bene amore mio." The brunette said repeteadly.
She knew it actually wasn't fine. She knew that her wife was keeping something from her because the Maya she had faced a few hours earlier wasn't the same Maya she fell in love with. And she knew that her wife needed to talk about what had happened to relieve some of that pressure.
The blonde was still crying so hard that Carina thought she would never stop. And she knew that Maya didn't know how to apologize to her. Not for pride or to not feel weak, but because she didn't know how to make sure the italian would know that she was sorry for real.
And it felt like Maya was crying all the tears she had kept inside for the past months. Including facing her father the day of the wedding, the sunspension and the tension that was creating between them.
"We're gonna be ok bella." Was all Carina managed to say. She didn't want to simply reassure her wife, she knew it wouldn't work. She wanted to make her believe again that she wasn't going anywhere far from her.
Maya had told her months ago that one of the things that scared her the most was phisically hurting Carina.
The italian knew that being her father's daughter was Maya's greatest fear.
But she also knew that Maya loved her too much to even just raise her voice against her. In fact Maya neved did. She never yelled towards Carina, not even when she did things that, fair enough, would piss her off.
The big fight that they had on the day of her proposal had been the only time, and screams where shared between the two.
Carina thought that it would never happen. And she was so caught off guard earlier that the reactions she had towards her wife definitely made things worse.
But she knew, she knew that Maya didn't want to hurt her.
