Maddie looked in her bathroom mirror at herself. She was wearing a tight white dress which was her mothers. She sighed and grabbed a hair tie. She put her hair into a loose low bun. "I think I'm ready." She reassured herself. She opened the bathroom door.
She could hear the loud chatter of all of the guests. There was
classical music playing in the background of all of the talking. Maddie walked downstairs slowly so she didn't trip. She reached the bottom of the stairs and continued down the hall to the main room. People were gathered around long tables filling plates of food. The room wasn't that full but to be fair the town was small so it wouldn't have made sense for it to be packed. Hazel was playing the piano in the corner. A prodigy at 11.
Maddie scanned the room for Issac. He was her best friend of the sibling since he was the closest to her age. There were people everywhere and Issac wasn't that recognizable as he looked like every 16 year old boy. Tall brunette and boring. Maddie gave up on finding him figuring there would be no point in trying to talk to him in all of this noise.
"I need everyone's attention please!" Maddie's father yelled. "Some guests have gone into wolf form and we need help finding them."
People in the crowd murmered. Then someone shouted, "Why?"
"They are not in normal conscious form, we believe something triggered something in their brain to make them act this way. They went out the back door and we do not want the village to know of such things." He responded calmly. Everyone began to exit through to back door and transform so they would be able to find the missing people.
Everyone spread out throughout the upper parts of the mountain. Maddie stayed inside with the rest of the younger adults and children. She left the room and went to her own. She grabbed a book from her shelf and began reading while sitting on the floor.
She eventually heard the house begin to fill with voices again. Everyone had gotten back. Maddie continued to read then she heard her door creak open a little. She looked up to see a boy. He had blonde hair that covered his ears.
"Hi." He said awkwardly.
"Uh hi?"
"Y-you're Maddie, right?" He stuttered
"Yeah..?"  Maddie was confused. She had seen him earlier talking to Rose. He stepped into Maddie's room and shut the door. "What are you doing?"
"Uhm.." He sat down in front of her. "I'm Will. I was talking to your sister earlier..Rose I think.." He looked down at the floor. "She said you are 14."
Maddie was so confused. "What about it?"
"Uhm well I am 15 and I was wondering if we could be friends or something..?"
"Oh uh sure." Maddie was kinda weirded out.
"What are you reading?" He asked
"Oh its a book my mom wrote.." Maddie looked up from her book. Will looked up at her and smiled.
"Whats it about?"
"Oh uh..it's about uhm.." Maddie's mind fogged up. All she could think about was his eyes. They were green, like the forest that surrounded the town. "Its about a princess." She finished.
"Thats cool. I love reading myself." He spoke so elegantly, as if he were coming from a book. Maddie looked up again and Will looked up as well. Their eyes locked and Maddie could feel her chest pounding. He looked at her with a smile. She continued to stare at him as he moved closer to her. He moved right next to her and leaned closer to her and looked at the book. "Wow your mom is good with words."
"Yeah she was."
"Was?" Will asked
"She uh..passed a few years ago.." Maddie said with a tone of sadness in her voice.
"Oh I'm so sorry.." Will looked down in regret.
"It's fine." Maddie sighed. Will looked at her with sorrow in his eyes. Maddie leaned on his shoulder and sighed again. "I read her books a lot because she liked to hide little notes in her books. She was a wonderful mother." Maddie looked at Will. She smiled at him. He smiled back and then looked back at the book.
"Is this your favorite book?"
"Yeah. How did you know?"
"The spine is really worn.." Will ran his finger over the spine of the book. He looked up at Maddie and leaned in slowly. Maddie looked at him and realized what he was doing. She closed her eyes and leaned in as well. Then their lips met. Will turned to face her and grabbed her back. He pulled her in close. Maddie felt her heart beating in her throat. Maddie pulled away slowly and looked at Will. His eyes were focused on hers and smiled.
"Woah."
"Uhm what's your number?" Will asked.
"Here." Maddie held out her hand and Will gave her his phone. She added her number in and smiled. "Want to hang out tomorrow? I don't think I have any plans.."
"Sure. I'll ask my parents. I don't think we have any plans either." Will stood up and smiled at Maddie again.
"Want to come over for dinner? Maybe spend the night..?"
"Yeah I think that would be fine." Maddie stood up and looked at Will and smiled back. She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. She moved back and smiled again.
"I'll see you later darling." Will stepped out of Maddie's room and walked down the stairs. Maddie stood in the door frame and watched him go into the main room. She stepped back into her room and closed the door. She fell back onto her bed and squealed.
"Holy shit that just happened."
