Nick's sister finds him outside of the theater.

Her shirt says "POP=DEATH". She had carefully gooped this PSA onto a royal blue t-shirt with puffy paint. 

"Mom wants you to get ahold of her. She wants to start planning your graduation party."

"I'm not having a party. There will already be plenty of other parties. No necessito." 

"Yeah, but grandma and Dan and [blah, blah, blah...] will all be coming into town... and they'll want to spend time with you"

"So I'll just visit with them..."

"But mom just wants to do something nice."

Yeah. Right. Nick rolls his eyes and moves onto his next class.

Nothing was "given" from his mom. Everything she did was part of a tactic. A strategy for power. For control. "Gifts". Guilt. Shame. These were the levers she preferred. 

He was tired of the invisible strings. The double standards. That's why he moved out years ago.
