Anna

While I was doing my job, I saw something being dropped into the sea. After checking Chief Lllapa and his men were okay for a little while, I swam to it as quickly as I could. I checked that no one on the boats above spotted me in case they were enemies.

When I arrived at what was dropped into the sea, I was shocked to see what – or rather who – it was – my good friend Chel! And cuffed and chained up and passed no less!

"Chel, are you all right?" I asked.

I got no reply at all.

"Come on, Chel," I said. "Give me something. Anything."

I still got nothing from her. As she was a mermaid, I couldn't tell whether she was breathing or not. Then I checked her forehead, but I couldn't feel anything, just the dampness from the sea. Then I checked her pulse and I felt a beat, so I knew that she was still alive. While I tried to work out how to get Anna conscious again, I remembered that she was dropped into the sea from one of those ships above. That must have meant that she was spotted by the crew on that ship and they did this to her. Then I remembered Chief Lllapa and his men getting towards the fleet. Knowing that Chel was just knocked out and not dead, I swam back as quickly as I could to warn them. But before I left, I said to her, "I'll come back for you, Chel. I promised.

I hoped the crew of the fleet above couldn't spot me as I swam underneath them. When I saw I was getting close to Lllapa's boat, I immediately dived out of the sea and jumped on their boat. I didn't know I could do that. I guess I never was given the opportunity to do it.

"What's up, Anna?" Lllapa asked.

"Turn around!" I ordered. "Those boats are not our friends. They're our enemies!"

"How do you know that?" Lllapa asked.

"I saw Chel being dropped into the sea and I went to check on her and she's cuffed and chained up and knocked out but still alive."

Then the boat was greeted by a spear.

"You need any more information?" I asked Lllapa.

Lllapa turned to his men. "Turn the boat around!" Then he turned back to me. "Anna, swim back to the island and tell Patlee to get everyone off the island and sail away for safety. We will hold them off."

I dived back in the sea to carry out my orders. I tried to see how everyone on the island sailing away would work. If they sailed, they could be captured by these bad guys. On the other hand, if they stayed on the island or tried to either hide or fight on it, they would be captured. If only everyone could breathe underwater like I could right now, I would be able to hide them. Then I thought what if these monsters or some of them could breathe underwater themselves and they could sniff them out? By the time I reached the island, I knew I had no better ideas and I didn't have time to try and think of any, so I decided to stick to what Lllapa said.

I popped my head out onto the surface. I didn't even get to my rock because I knew I would have to dive back into the sea quickly. "Patlee! Patlee!"

He and a few warriors behind him ran to me. "What's up, Anna?"

"Your brother has ordered an evacuation of the island," I told him. "These boats are not our friends. They captured you sister, knocked her out and threw her to the sea. Your brother and his men are holding them off as best as they can."

Patlee looked worried at the fact that both his stepbrother and his triplet sister was in danger. "There must be a better way," he said.

"There isn't," I said. "And we don't have time to work out anything. We must go now. And don't worry about Chel. I'll get her to safety when I can."

"You're right, Anna," Patlee said. "Go and help Lllapa and his men as best as you can. Leave the evacuation to me. And do what you can for Chel. Please."

"I promise," I said.

Then Patlee turned to face the warriors behind him. "Gather everyone, take them to the boats and sail away at once!" he ordered. Then he ran behind them.

I dived back in to help with what I could find. I swam back to Lllapa and his men. They were still sailing from the enemy fleet, but they were still gaining on them. I thought I needed to find a way to make their boats sink, so I dived down and looked to find what I could. All I could find were some rocks. There was nothing else. Seeing as there was nothing else to do, I picked them up and threw one to the nearest boat gaining on them. I was surprised when it made a hole in it and it started to sink. And the monsters started to sink as well. Feeling good about helping my friends, I swam to the other boats, threw rocks at the small boats and they were sinking very fast.

Then there was only one boat left - the big one. I was out of rocks, so I had to try to find a way to make a hole in at the hull of the ship. I swam to study it, but I was captured by something. It was a giant claw. A giant lobster claw by the look of it. I turned and I saw it was a giant lobster. It took me to the surface and dropped me on deck. There I was greeted by more monsters and their leader Tzekel-Kan.

"Ah, another of Miguel's friend turned into a mermaid," Tzekel-Kan said.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked him. "What are you trying to achieve by serving these terrible gods?"

"You know how they were mere mortals that became gods by killing a god?" Tzekel-Kan said. "Well, the world will soon have a new god. A more powerful one who knows how the world should work."

I gasped at that. "You can't do that."

Tzekel-Kan just laughed. "Oh, yes, I can. But don't worry I won't kill Miguel... yet. I just need him alive for a little longer." He turned to his soldiers. "Take her to the brig."

Before the monster soldiers could grab me, I managed to roll away from them and dived off the boat, but I was picked up by a giant bird monster. I think it was the shape of a blackbird. It flew me up above the ship and then dropped me. I saw some monsters opening the brig and I fell into it. I felt some bruises on my arms and mertail as some monster soldiers chained me up to the wall. I heard laughter. I looked ahead to see it was coming from Tzekel-Kan.

"You are a lot of fun," he said. "Pray that you will prove yourself useful and I do not have to kill you." Then he followed the soldiers out of the brig and locked me in it.

Chained up, I sat in the brig all alone and could do nothing except feel my bruises on my arms and mertail and fear for the lives of my friends as I heard a lot of war cries going on. Then after two hours of hearing a battle, everything went quiet. I assumed that Tzekel-Kan and his army had killed them all, but I was wrong when almost most of my friends from New Paititi was still alive and thrown into the brig to be chained up like me, including Patlee.

"How many did Tzekel-Kan kill or recruit?" I asked Patlee.

"He didn't recruit anyone," Patlee said. "Most of us are alive, but we lost a lot of good people today, including Chief Lllapa."

I gasped. "Does that mean you're the new chief of New Paititi?"

He sighed. "I'm not sure if I can do. Not as well as Lllapa or my stepfather."

"But you are a good chief," I said. "Look at what you just achieved today. You managed to do everything you could in your power and control for your people. Look at all the lives you managed to save today.

Everyone agreed with me.

"Thanks," he said. Then he gasped after he looked around. "You couldn't help Chel, could you?"

I sighed. "When I tried to escape this ship, finding Chel was the first thing I wasn't to do, but Tzekel-Kan stopped me. I'm so sorry, Patlee."

Neither he nor I nor anyone in the brig could say a single word, except the children who would say, "I'm tired" or "I'm hungry."
