Back Home

I took the rest of the vacation I had at home to relax and unwind from the weekend I had. My uncle called me to tell me that the necklaces and rings I found in the box did in fact belong to girls who were missing. One of those rings belonged to Sara Rose and her parents couldn’t thank him enough for the peace of mind Harper and I have given them. I checked my account and the money from the job we did was in fact deposited into it. I get half up front and the other half when the job is over. Because of the situation I almost feel bad for having that family pay but then remembering what I had to put myself through to prove Kevin did in fact kill Sara it eased my mind a little.

Harper tried to call me a couple times but I ignored his calls. I did however end up calling my cell phone company and having the number changed. Unless Harper was willing to leave this life and our uncles behind, there was no point in making it harder than it needed to be.

The first day back at work was a god send. I was going out of my mind sitting at home trying to get last weekend out of my head. Not just because of Kevin but because of how close Harper and I had gotten. I did everything to keep him off my mind. I even went to karaoke bars with some girlfriends of mine but every song reminded me of him so that didn’t work like I had hoped it would.

“Hey Rey, how was your vacation?” Jack had found me in the locker room getting ready for my shift.

“Um, I have had better.” I said as I put my scrub top over my tank top I was wearing.

“Well did you give that job offer any thought?” he said with hope in his voice. Oh man I didn’t even think about that to be honest with you, but I already knew my decision.

“Yea and I think I’m going to take it. I mean that’s if you can help me. If I need time off to take care of my uncle and a nurse doesn’t show up can you step in and help me out? Cause that’s the only way I can take the job.” He was already doing both so I thought if I can at least relieve some responsibilities from him he would at least agree to helping me if needed.

“Sure that sounds fare. I really didn’t want to go looking outside the hospital for a new head nurse. And besides if I did and she wasn’t understanding of your situation and didn’t give you the time off you need then you would probably quit and I really don’t want to see that happen. I need you here.” He said with a big smile on his face. I guess I’m taking the job then.

A month went by of me doing my new duties and because I didn’t have any work for my uncle it went smoothly. The nurses there weren’t too happy with me getting the promotion and they decided to retaliate against me. They would call off for no reason or they would just be plain lazy on their shifts. I got Jack behind me when I told him something needed to be done or he was going to have to find a new head nurse. He agreed with me and we got Amanda, the ring leader, suspended without pay for a period of time. After that the other nurses started acting better, they even put what they had against me aside and made an effort to get to know me.

According to the girls Amanda had made up some crazy rumors about me to get them to stay away from me. I was quick to set the record straight. One of the rumors was that I was a drug dealer stealing drugs from the hospital and every time I went out of town it was to sell them. I had to laugh at that. I told them the reason I go out of town was because my uncle was sick and I had to go and take care of him. I told them that he was a moody old man and was firing his nurses left and right so in the time where the agency couldn’t find a replacement I would do the job for him. They believed that story mainly because while I was in the middle of the story my uncle had called me to check up on me and he wasn’t pleased that I wasn’t seeing the psychologist he had sent to me to make sure I was really okay from the last job. When the girls heard me arguing with him and telling him he was out of his mind and being difficult they had no choice but to believe me. Let’s just say thank god they couldn’t hear the other side of the conversation.
