Epilogue
“Good morning my love” Harper said as he held me tight in bed. We were back at my uncle’s house in Florida.
“Good morning” I said back with a smile on my face.
I turned to him and kissed him as he got out of bed. Harper headed downstairs to get a cup of coffee and to check on Ian.
I continued to lie in bed and just stared out the window thinking about Jack and questioning if I really did see him or if I was hallucinating from the smoke. Just then a small little box on my window seat caught my eye.
I swung the blankets off of me and walked over to the window. I picked up the box wondering how it got here. I didn’t remember putting this here the last time I was here. I then opened it.
“Jack” I whispered.
I pulled out the sea-glass that Jack and I found on the beach in Hawaii. The glass when we found it was in a shape that looked like a dolphin. The glass was green with a blue color swirled in it. Jack and I thought it was odd to find sea-glass like that so we took it back to the house. Jack wanted to put it in a keepsake box so he could always remember our honeymoon.
When I placed the glass in my hand I noticed it was different. Jack had sent it to a jeweler and had it polished and smoothed. He had also had a white gold chain attached to it and had it turned into a charm.
“Kitten?” uncle Charley called out to me from my bedroom door.
“Where did this come from?” I asked holding up the dolphin.
“It was sent here when you guys went to California. With everything you were going through with Jack I didn’t want you to have this until you were ready” He said referring to the time Jack, Harper and I went.
My eyes filled with tears never taking my eyes off of the beautiful necklace Jack had made me.
“We found this sea-glass on the beach while on our honeymoon” I told Charley.
“I know, Jack told me to expect it” He said as he walked closer to me. “He also called me from the hospital in Texas and told me to hang onto it until the time was right for you to have it” Standing behind me Charley put his arms around me and I leaned my head back to rest it on his chest.
“I miss him Charley” I said as I turned and cried on his shoulder.
“I know kitten” he said as he held me.
After letting me cry on his shoulder Charley stepped back and took the necklace from me.
“Here let me” he said as he unclasped the lock on the chain opening it.
I turned and lifted my hair up off of my neck and Charley placed the necklace on my neck. When he was done the charm fell to the middle of my chest close to my heart. My hand immediately went straight for it and I held it in my hand.
“I love you Jack” I whispered into the charm and then started to cry. Charley quickly pulled me into his arms and held me as tight as he could.
“Mom, are you okay?” I heard Ian ask.
“I’m fine baby” I said as I quickly wiped my tears.
“Then why are you crying?” he asked as he entered my room.
“I’m just happy to be home” I lied as I pulled him into a hug and I kissed him on his head. We then walked down together to the kitchen to get breakfast.
I walked to the counter, poured a cup of coffee and turned to look at my family. Harper was sharing jokes with Ian over a bowl of fruity pebbles and Charley and Max was reading the paper. I couldn’t help but think that my family was now complete. Even though Jack was missing I knew he was watching and protecting us. I finally felt at peace with my life.
