Florida summers were the best. No school, just parties and fun that starts at the break of dawn when the sun first hits the surface and dives into the stars of the deep night. Endless opportunities and endless cards of fate. Choices and refusals we never had to make before. And although it was somewhat pressuring, it felt so reassuring and comforting knowing that we had those amounts of freedom, that was every teenager living on the east coast's mindset, or so I thought up until I met one boy in particular.

It was the second week of summer break and my best friend, Nick, was throwing a beach party. It was an open party meaning literally anyone could come. Nick was quite popular, he was known for being on the basketball team, mostly. He only got his popularity because of a video of him cussing off the quiet kid during a friendly game of basketball. It wasn't the best thing to be known by but it gained him popularity, nonetheless.

Nick and I had done everything together. We first met in second grade when he was being picked on for being short. I felt bad for the guy so I walked over there and told off the kids who were picking on him. It was nothing too intense but I got the bullies to go away and said "it's me and you now, come with me".

That's when all the chaos started, but I'm blessed to have him in my life. I love him, he's like a brother to me.

I, on the other hand, am not very popular, I mean I have a lot of friends (mostly through Nick) but none that I really connect with. I have Nick and that's it. I mean, don't get me wrong I love not having all eyes on me, it makes me feel free.

Nick and I are roommates so we were both getting ready for the party together although he was getting ready physically and I was getting ready mentally.

I put on an oversized hoodie, grey sweats and a few rings. I sat down on the edge of my bed and shoveled on my black hightop converse, the tips were basically still a perfect white, I really didn't go out much, my social anxiety would always get the best of me. I ran my fingers through my long blonde hair making it split directly in the middle of my scalp resulting in my hair falling on my eyes on each side. I walked over to my dresser and grabbed my eyeliner pencil, slowly applying it to the outskirts of my eye and then applying it to the bottom, rubbing it so it would smudge. I would wear eyeliner quite often, it 'brings out my eyes' according to Nick and quite honestly I can't disagree.

"You almost ready dude?" Nick asked, leaning on the frame of my door.

"Yeah I'm ready to go" I said looking back at him as I grabbed my phone off the charger and walked over to him. Once I got close enough to the door he walked out with me and we began to make our way to the beach where the party was being held.

Nick and I set up a bunch of drinks, some alcoholic (Nick's choice) and some non-alcoholic (my choice) and I made sure to label them. Nick didn't ask me to but I figured there'd be people at this party who don't like alcohol either.

I had set up candles and other sources of light around the beach where the party was being held, while on the other side of the beach Nick was building a bonfire.

Finally the sun was setting over the ocean and instantly the people started arriving

And instantly I wanted to leave.
