TW: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH

Bright, white lights lit up the cramped and panicked hallway of Karl Jacob's hospital room. The small room is filled with colorful flowers and worried expressions from both Karl's friends and family. All familiar faces looked back and forth from one another to the college football player in the bed with broken ribs and an unresponsive mind. There was only one familiar face that couldn't bring himself to check on the man in the bed-- that same man's lover.

At the rate Sapnap was crying, there would be tears stained into his dirty football jersey for months. He couldn't stop the constant flow of tears that would stream down his face. Sapnap sat impatiently in the waiting room away from the swarm of people in the small room three doors down. He couldn't bring himself to go into that room without completely losing his shit. He and Karl weren't out yet, and Sapnap was afraid if he went into that room, it would be obvious.

Sapnap waited for what must have been hours staring into the half empty vending machine and listening to the sound of its buzz. The dark night of yesterday faded into birds tweeting and sunlight pouring through the cracks in the blinds. "If only Karl had just listened to me, he wouldn't be dying in the hospital. I should have tried harder to talk him out of it. I should have taken his place..." Sapnap fought with himself in his head. He kept scrolling back through young memories and trying to pinpoint exactly what and where it all went wrong.

Sapnap looked up when he heard the door start creaking open. He quickly wiped away whatever tears would possibly be there, and he put on a fake half-worried face. A half relieved smile and a mess of blonde hair poked his head through the door-- Dream. Sapnap relaxed a little bit at the sight of the man. Dream was the only person who knew about Karl and Sapnap. He walked in on them one day asleep on Sapnap's couch cuddling and kissing.

"Hey, Pandas," Dream awkwardly made his way into the waiting room and plopped down next to the younger man. Sapnap could smell body spray and sweat clinging to the older's clothes.

"Hey Dream," Sapnap grumbled half heartedly.

"Everyone left. Maybe you should too? Maybe get some sleep?" The dark circles under Sapnap's eyes were prominent. How was Sapnap supposed to sleep when the love of his life was in the hospital?

"I haven't even got to see him, Dream. He's my boyfriend, and I haven't even got to see him." Sapnap was out of tears.

"Well, no one is here now..."

"It's my fault he is here." Sapnap admitted with a sigh.

"Pandas c'mon... you can't be serious. There is no way Karl wouldn't have gotten tackled like that. And if it was you, it would be you in here, and I would be having the same exact conversation with Karl."

Sapnap wandered down the obnoxiously bright hallway until he got to room 304. Karl's room. He took a deep breath and wiped the sweat from his hands onto the grass stained shorts he was wearing. He took one more deep breath before grasping the cold handle and walking into a much dimmer lighted room.

The first thing Sapnap noticed was the curly headed boy fast asleep in the plain white bed. He had tubes coming out of every which way. The second thing Sapnap noticed was the constant beeping of the vitals machine. The third was that the boy in front of him slowly and cautiously tried to open his eyes.

Sapnap's eyebrows and eyes rose with alertness and he rushed to the bed. "Karl?" A fresh wave of tears were brought to Sapnap's eyes as he croaked out the name of his beloved boy.

"Sapnap?" Karl managed to faintly whisper. Karl managed a smile and Sapnap smiled back. Sapnap reached out for the hand of the boy in front of him. He gave him small kisses on every inch of Karl's face.

Then, the clouds covered the sun, Karl was passed out again, and his vital machine was beeping hysterically. Sapnap remembers yelling for help. Sapnap remembers calling out Karl's name. Sapnap remembers the doctors and nurses rushing in. He remembers screaming and sobbing. He remembers seeing the pale faced boy grow paler. He remembers a lot, but at the same time, he forgot so much. He forgot that doctors had to escort him out of the room. He forgot everything they said to calm him down. He forgot a lot of things, but he would never forget the light in Karl's eyes before everything went dark and the giggles that rang out before screams.
