WILL GOLD, PROFESSIONALLY KNOWN AS WILBUR SOOT, sat in front of his computer with great trepidation. Though he had done it nearly hundreds of times before, nothing could prepare him for the tremendous anxiety that came from his every move being watched by an audience of 80,000 strangers. He watched the levels rise and fall on a voice channel as his fellow streamers and friends, Tommy and Tubbo, chatted aimlessly while waiting for the older streamer to start.
With a deep breath and a long sip of his water, Wilbur allowed the stream introduction to fill the screen of his viewers. The streamer buried his anxieties deep within him -- knowing full well that they would reappear with a deadly wrath as soon as the screen shut off.
He hummed the final chords of the intro, an instrumental version of Your New Boyfriend, before flashing a self-satisfied grin into the camera.
"Hello, chat!" Will exclaimed. "How are we doing today?"
The beginning of his stream went off without a hitch -- once he jumped into a call with Toby and Tommy, it was easy to make his stream feel conversational and relaxed. Occasionally, he would jump into the chat's insanity to answer questions, but Wilbur tried to keep his focus on what was happening in front of him in the game without sacrificing too much of himself to the internet.
"Wilbur!" Tubbo exclaimed. "Can I show you something?"
A wide smile stretched across the older man's face. He had formed a brotherly bond with the younger streamers, feeling protective over their innocence and youth whilst they grew up on the internet. The genuine excitement in Toby's voice was something Wilbur hadn't felt on his stream in a long while.
"Yeah, go on."
The sounds of a keyboard rang through the Discord call. Though they were first fumbled and sloppy, the teenager quickly relaxed into the music. He was an imperfect musician, but the song was easily recognizable.
"'Round and 'round we go," Wilbur sang. "Heroes fall like dominoes. We try to help it, but we won't."
The three boys sang the final line of the chorus together. "All we know is that we don't!"
As the song came to a close, Wilbur said, "I didn't realize you listened to Gia, Tommy."
"What? Why?"
"I thought you only liked shit music."
"Yeah, I like your music, don't I?" the boy countered. "Besides, isn't Gia a bit mainstream for you, Will? I thought you only listened to indie bullshit, you prick."
The young streamer exploded in laughter, sounding half between a kettle and a fire alarm.
Toby interrupted the scream-laughter with a question of absolute innocence. "Would you ever work with Gia?" he asked, voice full of youth. "I think you, her, and Lovejoy would make a nice song together."
Wilbur let out a half-laugh, half sigh. "Yeah, let me just pull out the world-famous pop star's number and ask."
"Well," Tommy said. "That's kind of what Twitter is, innit?"
Wilbur grabbed a bright-orange harmonica from his desk and displayed it to the camera with a dead stare. "If Gia Camazzola tweeted at me, I would inhale this harmonica. Imagine how I would feel if she asked to write a song together."
"Seriously though, it can't hurt to try."
