WATCHING YOUR MENTEE choke over a speech about control and discipline of The Capitol was never on Sadie Sterling's list of dreams to one day achieve. However, growing up in district eight, she never thought of a good enough list of activities anyway. All eyes were either on Sadie situated in the corner observing the young boy or on the victor at the microphone.
Everett couldn't bare to look up from his cards given to him by Genevieve as he continued forcing out words fed to him by President Snow. The entirety of district 12 had cold expressions that masked their flaming rage inside. Each word coming from Everett's mouth caused the burning fire to expand gradually. The boy was already a pawn in Snow's taunts, and he was only the tender age of 14. The youngest victor alongside Finnick Odair, a tribute from district four.
As his robotic speech ended, he cleared his throat, tucking the cards back into his pocket. He gathered enough courage to look up from his feet and examined the most impoverished district. The people looked anything from friendly, which caused him to glance back at his polished shoes.
Not knowing if Everett was done with his speech, Sadie stayed in her place. Everett wanted to say something, anything, but he didn't know what. Where would he even begin? He held back the temptation to look at Sadie for help and sighed.
"I'm sorry, no one should have to experience the games. To the families of the 23 tributes who didn't come out, I wish for you to know that you're children or siblings didn't go down without a fight. They fought, and I implore you to continue that fight for them," said Everett. Many faces softened but seeing the peacekeepers surrounding them take steps forward and try to warn Everett, Sadie walked forward and grabbed Everett's shoulders. She led him towards the door of the Justice Building, shoving the two peacekeepers guarding the area out of the way.
